Pinnacle Environmental Management Support, Inc. is seeking a Director of Technology and Product to own strategy, roadmap, policy, and the lifecycle for proprietary systems.
This role leads a small internal team and strong external partners, shaping how technology enables environmental services clients and internal operations. The position requires seven+ years in tech roles with leadership experience, plus a track record in managing vendors and delivering end-to-end development cycles.
Director of Technology and Product
Full-Time | Exempt | Hybrid, with regular hours in Greensboro, NC office | Reports to the President & Chief Innovation Officer | $115,000 – $135,000 base, plus a bonus program for achieving goals
Pinnacle has been investing in technology for thirty years. Cindy Williams started the firm in 1996, and almost from the start we built our own claims management platform because our clients needed better reporting than anyone was offering them. We've kept building since: proprietary systems that run our claims and compliance work, and data and reporting that some of the largest owners and operators in fuel retail, energy and environmental services rely on. Technology is one of the three pillars of our strategy, alongside people and process, and it's a big part of why clients treat us as an extension of their own teams.
The practices that got us here grew up alongside the work. The next step is to standardize them, bring in the discipline of someone who has run technology as a profession, and put AI and the newer tools to work where they'll improve what our people and our clients get from us. You'd own technology at Pinnacle: strategy, roadmap and policy, the lifecycle every initiative runs through, operations, security and infrastructure, and the vendors, the budget and what it returns. You'd report to the President, sit on the leadership team, and work directly with the founder and the leaders who built the business.
You'd lead a small internal team and a set of strong outside partners: an IT Manager who reports to you, a managed services provider, the developers who build and maintain our proprietary systems, and a fractional technology advisor for the strategic questions. Choosing those partners well, briefing them clearly and holding them to what they committed to is a large part of the job, and so is knowing when the better answer is to configure what we already own or do the work ourselves.
The piece we care about most is the lifecycle. Our consultants know environmental work better than any tool does, and they bring ideas and requests constantly. Turning those into requirements, getting them built, tested, accepted and released, and making sure people adopt them is the work that matters most here. We want one disciplined way of doing it, sized for a company our size. Around it sits the rest of what a company needs from its technology leader: a roadmap leadership can plan against, policies people follow, a security posture that holds up to what our clients' contracts and our insurance require, and a budget you can defend because you can show what it returned.
The people who do well here want to build, and they've done it somewhere the budget was real and the users were down the hall. They'd rather choose the right vendor and hold them to a standard than hire a department. They aren't drawn to the newest tool for its own sake; they're drawn to what people will actually use, and they're disciplined about documentation, acceptance and follow-through because they've seen what happens without it. They like working alongside owners who are in the business every day and want a partner in deciding where technology goes next.
Useful but not required: an MBA or comparable business education, professional services or regulated-industry experience, SQL, the Power Platform, Azure or AWS, experience bringing AI tools into daily operations, or a credential such as Professional Scrum Product Owner, PMP or Lean Six Sigma.
For over 30 years, Pinnacle has built an exceptional reputation for delivering results for clients in the fuel retail industry. Our success comes from talented people who take pride in their work, value collaboration, and understand that our clients' success is at the heart of what we do every day. We're looking for people who want to be part of a high-performing team where capable colleagues support one another, solve problems together, and share in the wins.
A sixty-person company cuts both ways. You'll shape how technology works here for years, and your decisions will show up in how sixty people work and how our clients experience us. There will also be stretches where you're the one working an operations problem until the department runs the way you've designed it. For some people that's exactly the appeal. For others it isn't, and it's better to know going in.
