Director of Surgical Services | San Antonio, TX
Full-Time | Day Shift (5 x 8 hours) | Relocation Assistance Available
Are you a Nurse Manager or Nurse Supervisor ready to step into a Directorship? This is a rare opportunity to lead a high-volume surgical service with real autonomy, a seat at the table, and the freedom to make decisions for your department.
About the Role
We’re seeking a Director of Surgical Services to lead Operating Room and GI services at a 250+ bed nonprofit hospital in one of San Antonio’s fastest-growing areas. The hospital recently expanded with a new patient tower and continues to grow its surgical programs.
This is an administrative and operations-focused leadership role. You’ll partner closely with senior nursing leadership while running your departments independently, and you’ll stay connected to your team through regular presence on the unit.
Scope at a glance:
- 48 direct reports
- 7 operating rooms and a GI department
- Approximately 500 cases per month
- Service lines include CVOR, robotics, neurology (newer program), pediatrics, general surgery, and orthopedics
Why This Job
- True independence. You’ll have real decision-making authority over OR and GI operations, not a director title with manager-level control.
- Administrative focus. This role centers on leadership, staffing, budgeting, and operations rather than hands-on bedside work.
- Be an "open door" leader. You’ll have the time and visibility to connect with your staff regularly, mentor them, and build a strong culture.
- A step up. This is an excellent path for a Nurse Manager or Supervisor ready to move into a Directorship, and leadership can be developed on the job.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop OR and GI nursing teams, including staffing, scheduling, coaching, and performance evaluations
- Manage the department budget, productivity, and variance analysis
- Ensure quality, patient safety, and compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
- Monitor patient outcomes and drive performance improvement initiatives
- Partner with physicians, department heads, and administrators on service line strategy
- Manage conflict, resolve issues quickly, and foster a healthy, collaborative work environment
- Support patient flow and resource planning for a high-volume surgical service
Qualifications
Required:
- Current RN license (Texas or compact state)
- BSN
- 3-5 years of clinical patient care experience
- Minimum 2 years of healthcare leadership experience (supervisor or manager)
- BLS certification (AHA)
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related field
Why This Organization
- Significant opportunities for career growth and advancement across the organization
- Well known for an excellent employee culture and a mission-driven environment
Compensation and Benefits
- Sign-on and relocation bonus
- Up to 12.5% annualized leadership bonus
- Excellent benefits package and many additional employee perks
