Director of Student Services provides leadership and oversight for Special Education, Title I/LAP, ESL, Gifted, and other at-risk programs. The position supports students, families, and staff through program development, coordination, evaluation, professional development, and collaborative leadership focused on improving student learning and outcomes.
- Provides collaborative administrative leadership and management by working with building principals and staff to develop, implement, improve and supervise high quality educational support programs and services.
- Coordinates with building principals the recruitment, selection, assignment of special education staff.
- Work with others to create a shared vision of instructional excellence; develop the partnerships, resources, and capacities to make the vision a reality.
- Develops and manages multiple budgets in conformance with budget allocations, district fiscal procedures, and state and federal fund source restrictions.
- Works cooperatively with the Finance Department relative to staffing levels and budgeting.
- Works positively with a diverse range of parents, staff, agency and community members to establish healthy involvement in planning, implementation and evaluation of programs pertaining to the education of exceptional children
- Establishes procedures for placement, evaluation, assignment and re-evaluation of students in the special education services program.
- Supervises and coordinate home instruction for homebound or hospitalized students.
- Monitors current programs for operational effectiveness and makes changes or recommendations for improvement.
- Assumes responsibility for compiling, maintaining and filing all reports, records and other documents legally required or administratively useful.
- Interprets programs for the special education services to the Board, administration, staff and the public.
- Coordinates placement of students outside the school district in alternate placements.
- Assigns, supervises and evaluates District special programs staff and designated staff, i.e., Psychologists, SLP’s
- Ensures timely response to Federal, State and local grants and reporting requirements.
- Coordinates in-service workshops and in-service opportunities for special education staff.
- Subscribes to and practices philosophy of teamwork and professionalism.
- Recommends needed changes in policy appropriate to assigned areas.
- Promotes good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation.
- Collaborates with Transportation Director to ensure necessary transportation is provided for special needs students.
