Job summary

Instrumentum is seeking a Director of Sterile Processing for our Richmond-area sites, including the ORC. This leadership role oversees the SPD across multiple facilities with travel between sites and a focus on quality, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

You will lead a team of Coordinators and Technicians, drive standardization of workflows, and collaborate with logistics and facility leadership to ensure trays are clean, complete, and on time.

Qualifications

Instrumentum is hiring a Director of Sterile Processing for our Richmond, VA Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) sites, including the ORC. $125,000–$175,000/year, based on experience.

The job

You’ll lead the Sterile Processing Department across Instrumentum’s Richmond-area BSMH sites, including the ORC — a footprint that may grow or shift over time, so this role is built around leading consistently across a variable multi-site structure, not a fixed count of locations.

What you will do

• Lead the Sterile Processing Department across our Richmond-area BSMH sites — directly overseeing site-level Coordinators, with overall accountability for Technician teams across multiple shifts
• Set department-wide goals, quality standards, and performance benchmarks, and hold the team to them
• Own compliance with AAMI, CDC, CMS, and other regulatory and accreditation standards — audits, inspections, and corrective action plans included
• Standardize workflows across sites and drive consistency shift to shift
• Coach and develop SPD Coordinators; be their first point of escalation
• Track the metrics that matter — accuracy, throughput, turnaround — and lead root‑cause investigations when something slips
• Represent Sterile Processing to Logistics, facility leadership, and the partners who depend on your team

What you need

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 5+ years of sterile processing experience, including 3+ years in a management role
• Comfort leading across multiple sites — this role covers the Richmond-area BSMH facilities, including the ORC, with regular circulation between them (10–25% travel)
• Active CRCST certification (or equivalent) required

What we would like to see

• HSPA Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) or CBSPD Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM)
• Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain, or a healthcare-related field
• Prior experience leading sterile processing across more than one facility or a system-level scope
• Familiarity with tracking, automation, or instrument-management technology

Who does well here

This role suits someone who's run an audit that could actually withstand scrutiny, not just pass one. Someone who can walk into a site they don't have day‑to‑day intuition for and read the workflow accurately within a week. Someone who'd rather fix the root cause of a missed tray than write another memo about it. If you've led people across more than one location before, and you're as comfortable in the car between sites as you are at a desk, that experience will serve you well here.

The physical side of the job

This is a hybrid office and production‑floor environment. We'd rather you know that now than find out in week two.

• Mostly leadership and oversight work — minimal routine lifting or hands‑on cart‑pushing
• Regular time on the production floor for rounds and oversight, alongside office‑based work
• Periodic exposure to biohazardous materials, strong odors, and moderate noise during floor time
• Extensive talking, hearing, reading, and seeing — this is a communication‑ and detail‑heavy role

Pay and benefits

• $125,000–$175,000/year, depending on experience and qualifications

Schedule and location

Offsite Reprocessing Center
2511 Britons Hill, Richmond, VA

This role also covers other Richmond‑area BSMH sites, including the ORC, and travels regularly (roughly 10–25% of the time) between them. No direct patient contact is expected as part of this role's normal scope.
