Job summary

Freire Charter Wilmington is seeking a Director of Special Education to provide strategic leadership for all SPED programs at our Wilmington, Delaware high school (8th-12th grade). You’ll supervise SPED teachers and related staff, ensure legal compliance, and collaborate with families to deliver inclusive, high-quality education.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; Master's in Special Education or related field preferred.
• Delaware Special Education Certificate or Special Education Director Standard Certificate required
• Minimum of two years of successful experience in special education leadership or coaching
• Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and Delaware special education regulations
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to build trust with students, staff, and families
• Commitment to Freire's mission and values (equity, love, critical thinking, diversity)

Responsibilities

• Lead the vision, implementation, and continuous improvement of the school's special education program.
• Supervise special education teachers, related service providers, and support staff.
• Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and Delaware regulations.
• Oversee timelines for evaluations, reevaluations, annual reviews, and progress monitoring.
• Represent the school at IEP meetings as appropriate.
• Monitor SDI, accommodations, and related services across classrooms.
• Coordinate referrals, evaluations, and related services (speech, OT, counseling).
• Engage families through proactive communication and serve as a resource.
• Manage special education budgets, contracts, and service agreements.
• Support recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention of SPED personnel.
