Job summary

Irby Construction Company, a long-time power-industry infrastructure builder, seeks a Regional Safety Director (Distribution) to lead safety programs across multiple projects in the assigned region. You will implement corporate safety programs, audit operations, and coach safety professionals to maintain a safe, compliant work environment.

The role requires at least 5 years of safety leadership, a bachelor’s in safety or related field, and a valid US driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Administer and oversee multiple project safety programs region-wide per Corporate Safety Programs.
• Perform audits and inspections; provide safety expertise.
• Supervise and develop Safety Coordinators and regional safety professionals.
• Audit jobsite safety reports and verify implementation of safety elements.
• Investigate accidents and follow up with corrective actions.

About This Role

The Regional Safety Director (Distribution) is responsible for the administration and oversight of multiple project safety programs within a designated distribution region to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. The position leads the rollout and implementation of Corporate Safety Programs, audits field operations for compliance, partners with regional leadership on strategic safety planning, and provides direction and development to assigned safety professionals.

This role requires a strong understanding of utility construction safety, the ability to identify and resolve jobsite hazards, and the leadership presence to influence safe work practices across multiple projects and teams. The Regional Safety Director monitors regional safety performance, supports incident investigation and corrective action, and helps align safety performance with operational, production, quality, and project-delivery objectives.

What You'll Do

• Administer and oversee multiple project safety programs across the assigned distribution region in accordance with Corporate Safety Programs and applicable requirements.
• Perform audits and inspections of work areas and provide safety expertise in response to identified deficiencies and requests for safety assistance.
• Supervise, coach, guide, and develop assigned Safety Coordinators and other regional safety professionals.
• Audit jobsite safety reports and verify implementation of required safety elements at project locations.
• Conduct and follow up on accident and incident investigations; ensure appropriate corrective actions are identified, documented, communicated, and completed.
• Evaluate Safety Professionals' ability to identify, communicate, and resolve safety issues on the jobsite and provide coaching or development as needed.
• Partner with regional leadership to create and implement strategic safety plans and corrective action plans for assigned areas.
• Identify, document, and recommend resolution of hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions; follow through to verify corrective actions have been completed.
• Compile incident-related data, photographs, documentation, and required forms and reports in accordance with company procedures and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Assist with employee, craft, insurance, and regulatory inspection walk-throughs and accompany inspectors when required.
• Support emergency situations as required and assist with auditing or maintaining fire protection and grounding systems.
• Track and report regional safety performance metrics, including TRIR, DART rate, EMR, near-miss trends, and leading indicators, and communicate results to regional and corporate leadership on a regular cadence.
• Partner with regional Operations leadership to align safety initiatives with production schedules, budget, quality goals, and overall operational objectives.
• Monitor and analyze the operational and financial impact of incidents, including workers' compensation claims, experience modification rate, insurance costs, downtime, and related risk factors; recommend corrective actions to reduce recurrence and cost.
• Participate in regional operational reviews to represent safety performance, highlight trends, and recommend continuous-improvement initiatives that support productivity and project delivery.
• Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for regional safety personnel and jobsite teams, connecting safety performance with broader regional operational goals.
• Use audit, inspection, and incident data to identify regional risk trends and drive proactive process improvements before they affect schedule, cost, quality, or field performance.
• Adhere to company standards, policies, and procedures and perform other duties assigned based on the needs of the region.

What You'll Bring

• Minimum of 5 years of related safety experience and training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Safety, Health, Environmental, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience may be considered.
• Demonstrated experience administering safety programs across multiple projects or jobsites, preferably within utility or construction operations.
• Proven leadership experience supervising, coaching, and developing safety professionals or field teams.
• Strong knowledge of occupational safety practices, incident investigation, corrective-action processes, and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Must maintain a valid driver's license and successfully complete required background screening.

Preferred

• Current certification, or active pursuit of certification, as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST), or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP).
• Formal Root Cause Analysis training.
• Experience supporting electric utility distribution construction or similar field operations.
• Experience leading safety strategy and performance improvement across multiple projects, crews, or geographic locations.

Travel Requirements

• Travel to project sites and work locations throughout the assigned region is required based on operational and safety needs.
• Must maintain a valid driver's license.
• Availability to respond to emergency situations and support field operations outside standard business hours may be required.

Physical Qualifications

• Ability to work in outdoor utility-construction environments and varying weather conditions.
• Ability to stand and sit frequently, use hands constantly, and bend, kneel, push, pull, and climb as jobsite conditions require.
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to safely work around moving mechanical equipment, loud environments, and electrical hazards while performing field audits and inspections.
