Job summary

Shaw Construction in Colorado seeks a Director of Safety to lead on-site safety programs across multifamily and workforce housing projects. This hands-on, field-facing role plans, implements, and manages safety initiatives, coaching crews and subcontractors to work safely and reduce risk.

You will conduct preconstruction planning, job hazard analyses, safety audits, OSHA investigations, and training, ensuring PPE provision and quarterly safety reports.

Qualifications

• 4-year degree in Safety & Health or equivalent with 3+ years safety experience in building construction.
• Teaching mindset—prefer showing the right way over just telling.
• Strong leadership, communication and training skills.
• Working knowledge of safety and environmental principles; MS Office proficient.

Responsibilities

• Develop and administer Shaw's safety program, including Hazard Communication and Chemical Inventory oversight.
• Conduct preconstruction planning and Job Hazard Analysis for all projects.
• Review subcontractor safety plans and assist in prequalification efforts.
• Perform site safety audits alongside outside Safety Consultant or insurer reps.
• Lead OSHA investigations and formal site visits as needed.
• Turn lessons learned from inspections into practical training.
• Coordinate and deliver safety orientation and training programs company-wide.
• Ensure all employees are issued PPE at onboarding.
• Compile quarterly and annual safety compliance reports for senior leadership.
• Investigate and report Workers' Compensation and insurance claims.
• Assist project teams with Storm Water Management and compliance.
• Administer motor vehicle record checks with Corporate Resource Manager.
• Coach and support project-assigned safety personnel with on-site PMs and Superintendents.

Shaw Construction is a Colorado-based general contractor specializing in multifamily and workforce housing projects across the Front Range, Western Slope, and mountain markets. We're looking for a safety leader who coaches crews to work safely, not one who just enforces rules from the sidelines.

About the Role

This is a hands-on, field-facing position responsible for planning, implementing, and managing safety programs that protect our people and reduce risk across all active projects. You'll spend real time on jobsites building relationships with project teams and subcontractors-teaching, mentoring, and problem-solving alongside them, not just checking boxes.

What You'll Do

• Develop and administer Shaw's safety program, including Hazard Communication and Chemical Inventory oversight
• Conduct preconstruction planning and Job Hazard Analysis for all projects
• Review subcontractor safety plans and assist in prequalification efforts
• Perform site safety audits alongside our outside Safety Consultant and/or insurance carrier representatives
• Lead OSHA investigations and formal site visits as needed
• Turn "lessons learned" from inspections into practical, ongoing training
• Coordinate and deliver safety orientation and training programs company-wide
• Ensure all employees are issued appropriate PPE at onboarding
• Compile quarterly and annual safety compliance reports for senior leadership
• Investigate and report Workers' Compensation and insurance claims
• Assist project teams with Storm Water Management and compliance

Travel

About 30% per month, visiting project sites across Colorado and surrounding markets.

What You Bring

• 4-year degree in Safety & Health or equivalent preferred, plus 3+ years of safety experience in building construction-or a strong combination of education and field experience
• A teaching mindset-you'd rather show someone the right way than
• Strong leadership, communication, and training skills
• Working knowledge of safety and environmental principles and techniques
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Ability to plan and schedule company-wide training, inspections, and related activities
• Physical ability to access active construction sites (climbing ladders, stairs, hoists; lifting up to 75 lbs)

Certifications (preferred or willing to obtain)

• OSHA 30 (required) | Goal: OSHA 500
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
• Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
• Certified Hazardous Materials Manager
