Job summary

The City of Aurora is seeking a seasoned civilian oversight leader to head the Public Safety Accountability Division. You will develop goals, manage oversight of complaints and investigations, and coordinate cross‑departmental efforts with city leadership.

Strong policy and data analysis skills are essential. This role requires a Bachelor’s degree, 6+ years in civilian oversight with supervisory experience, and exceptional communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, Law, Sociology, or related field.
• Six years of professional experience in civilian oversight or related areas, including three years in supervision/management.
• Valid Colorado Driver License with acceptable driving record at time of hire.
• Preferred certification or training in civilian oversight, investigations, auditing, or compliance.

Responsibilities

• Leads the Public Safety Accountability Division, including goals, work plans, procedures, performance measures, reports, and priorities.
• Provides civilian oversight of complaints, investigations, use of force matters, and other critical incidents.
• Reviews classification decisions, investigation progress, and disciplinary recommendations for fairness and compliance.
• Coordinates intake, community referrals, and explanations of processes to complainants and stakeholders.
• Develops annual accountability work plan based on risk, trends, and public safety priorities.
