Job summary

City of Barberton is seeking a Planning Director to lead the Planning Department, directing planning and development activities in alignment with city policies. The role involves implementing Commission and City Council directives, and working closely with residents, business owners, non-profits, grant funders, and schools to foster growth.

The ideal candidate has a BA in planning or a related field, at least five years of progressive planning experience, and preferably an AICP certificate.

Summary of Job Duties: The Planning Director reports to the Planning Commission and assumes responsibility for the planning, development, and direction of the various programs administered by the Planning Department; implements policies promulgated by the Commission, Mayor, and City Council.

The ideal candidate will have a collaborative work style, will have a demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the City and will possess passion and have a vision for the growth of the City. The Director will have strong communication and planning skills and must be able to create and maintain relationships with residents, business owners, non-profits, grant funders, school board/administration and City administration/council/board members.

Qualifications: The candidate shall have a bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field, as recognized by the American Planning Association (APA). The ideal candidate would have at least five years of related work experience, with progressive duties and responsibilities. An applicant possessing an American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certificate is highly desired.
