Job Description

The Director of Operations & Engineering is accountable for all plant operations, including manufacturing and processing operations and provides hands on support acting as the Technical Leader across the organization in the achievement of business objectives.This is accomplished through the application of knowledge in process engineering, process improvement, quality control/assurance, quality systems, product development, technical product application and the synergy of these core areas.This individual will also create and maintain cross functional relationships needed to foster a proactive engagement culture amongst the operations, commercial and finance teams while creating a productive working relationship in the field with manufacturing site leadership and with customers.

Primary Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Daily interaction with the operations and commercial teams to understand the current needs of the business based on customer feedback and analysis of operational capabilities to identify gaps to improve our processes and drive consistency across the manufacturing plants.
  • Develop, drive, and execute focused projects that will further improve our processes utilizing optimal technology that can be translated across all manufacturing plants – examples include increasing plant yield, crushing, screening, drying, bagging operation efficiency, feed rate improvement, product, and process quality improvement.
  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments to evaluate and validate that production processes are running as efficiently through thorough knowledge of unit process such as size reduction and screening/separation.Utilize this data-based approach to reduce the cost of manufacturing products.
  • Lead the design, development and execution of new plant design while meeting commercial, operational, and financial requirements.
  • Actively support and participate in root-cause analysis and corrective action for any quality issue or concern that occur at any of our manufacturing plants, third party manufacturers, or customer sites.
  • Based on voice of customer feedback lead in design of experiment to identify potential product solutions from either existing portfolio or pipeline of developmental products that meets customer need within the business goals for profitability.
  • Work closely with our Product Manager to technically support product development activities in prototype lab from raw material intake through batch processing and culminating with field abrasive blasting evaluation.
  • Oversees plant management to manage labor; train, advise, and mentor site leaders on all operational needs to ensure operational efficiencies.
  • Evaluates and monitors raw material yields and waste, works with plant management on screen set-ups, compliance with contracts, etc to meet daily requirement of plant operations.
  • Supports plant managers in the development of action plans to improve employee and plant performance, following up to ensure action plans are being implemented.
  • Monitors and controls plant expenses, approving purchase orders at a high level, initiating capital projects, and overseeing installation and completion of projects.
  • Manages annual budget responsibilities across operational site, working with site managers on plant budgets, preparing raw material utilization and inventory control reports, and preparing capital expenditures budget.
  • Must be willing to travel on average 50% of the time (8 days / month), more if a critical project or issue arises.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in Engineering and related fields
  • Minimum of 7 - 10 years progressive experience in engineering department of manufacturing or production services company including responsibility for design, safety, quality, reliability, performance, and economics of fixed facilities planning and development.
  • Requires successful management of personnel responsible for above functions.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to define, measure, analyze, improve and control processes with data.
  • Proven Process Improvement skillset and implementation ability – examples could include LEAN, Theory of Constraints, or other statistical tools/techniques of continuous improvement.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Sound knowledge and acumen of engineering theory and design criteria.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead capital improvement projects.
  • 3 years minimum experience managing people.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or similar field.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt and/or LEAN equivalent experience with statistical tools/techniques with demonstrated success of leading continuous improvement projects.Six Sigma Black Belt would be preferred.
  • Proven communication skills both oral and written working with all levels and functions of an organization and with external customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead capital improvement projects in a multi plant environment.
  • Minitab or equivalent statistical process application software experience is preferred.
  • Must be able to effectively work with external customers.
