Job summary

The Foundation for American Innovation (FAI) in Washington, DC seeks a Director of Operations to oversee HR, daily operations, finance, compliance, and organizational systems as we expand our team and complexity.

This full-time role reports to the Vice President of Operations and collaborates with policy, development, and external affairs to strengthen compliance, talent retention, and scalable processes for sustainable growth.

Qualifications

• Experience in nonprofit operations, finance, or human resources.
• Ability to align priorities across projects and departments.
• Experience overseeing payroll, benefits administration, and personnel policies.
• Strong GAAP, nonprofit compliance, and audit knowledge.
• Experience managing budgets across grants, programs, and restricted/unrestricted funds.
• Familiarity with federal grant or philanthropic reporting requirements.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and systems-thinking skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting.
• Collaborate on resource allocation, grant budgeting, and long-term planning.
• Design and maintain scalable operational processes for accuracy and accountability.
• Oversee contracts, vendor management, insurance, HR systems, and risk management.
• Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and employment law.
• Support restricted fund management and alignment of program expenditures with funder commitments.
• Oversee core HR functions and recruitment, onboarding, and performance management.
• Partner with leadership on talent management and benefits administration.
