Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Progressive nursing leadership experience in Skilled Nursing Facility or related setting.
• Management or supervision experience in long-term care, restorative or geriatric nursing preferred.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations governing long-term care.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Supervises nursing care provided by RNs, LPNs/LVNs and others under their supervision.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities per policies, laws, and regulations.
• Interviews, hires and trains employees; plans, assigns and directs work; prepares assignments.
• Monitors performance, conducts evaluations, and manages disciplinary actions as needed.
• Oversees operations in absence of higher management; uses independent judgment.

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall clinical operations of the nursing department. The DON serves as a key member of the facility’s leadership team, driving clinical excellence, fostering staff development, and promoting a culture of safety and resident-centered care.

Responsibilities

• Supervises nursing care provided by registered nurses, licensed vocational/practical nurses and others for whom they are administratively or professionally responsible.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizational policies and applicable laws and regulations.
• Supervisory responsibilities include:

• Interviews, hires and trains employees.
• Plans, assigns and directs work.
• Prepares work assignment sheets, taking into consideration Resident safety, the educational preparation, experience, knowledge and ability of the persons to whom the assignments are made.
• Transfers employees among units as needed.
• Prepares performance evaluations with the understanding that such evaluations impact tenure of probationary employees and wage increases of non-probationary employees.
• Disciplines employees up to and including discharge.
• Approves the correction of errors in timecards or other timekeeping records.
• Authorizes overtime as necessary.
• Receives and resolves employee complaints.
• Determines rotation of employees within facility.
• Monitors and corrects job performance of employees.
• Adequately supervises assigned staff and assures that those staff are supervising employees assigned to them.

• Oversee facility in absence of higher-ranking management officials.
• Uses independent judgment and discretion on behalf of the organization in the performance of these duties.

Education and/or Experience

• A graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
• Progressive nursing leadership experience in a Skilled Nursing Facility or related healthcare setting.
• Management of supervisor experience in long-term care, restorative or geriatric nursing preferred.
• Knowledgeable in state and federal regulations governing long-term care.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• Registered Nurse who is currently licensed to practice by the state.
• Current CPR certification or CPR certified within 90 days of employment.
