The Director of Nursing – Medical-Surgical provides 24-hour managerial and clinical leadership to support high-quality, safe, patient-centered, and cost-effective care. This position applies extensive clinical and management expertise to oversee the operational, clinical, financial, and personnel functions of assigned nursing areas.
The Director serves as a key clinical resource for nursing staff, physicians, patients, and families while driving operational excellence, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, and staff development.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN); candidates with a BSN must have a plan to complete an MSN.
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice, temporary RN license, or compact RN license applicable to the state of practice.
- Required Board Certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Additional certifications, specialty training, or continuing education may be required based on the area of practice.
- Demonstrated clinical leadership and nursing management experience, preferably in a medical-surgical setting.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Clinical & Patient Care Leadership
- Provide 24-hour managerial and clinical support to patients, nursing staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Serve as a real-time clinical resource for staff and physicians, providing guidance and support for complex or escalated patient care, process, and family-related issues.
- Promote and facilitate patient-centered nursing care for designated patient populations.
- Ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, evidence-based, and cost-effective patient care.
- Monitor clinical operations and identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes, safety, efficiency, and overall quality of care.
Operations & Resource Management
- Direct the day-to-day operations of assigned nursing units to ensure efficient patient care delivery and appropriate utilization of resources.
- Coordinate operations across departments to support seamless patient care and effective resource management.
- Develop, manage, and monitor departmental operating and capital budgets, maintaining accountability for financial performance and resource allocation.
- Ensure appropriate staffing, workflow, and operational processes to meet patient care needs.
Quality Improvement & Regulatory Compliance
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement and process improvement initiatives in collaboration with nursing leadership.
- Identify opportunities for operational and clinical improvement and implement sustainable solutions.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.
- Develop, implement, review, and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
- Solicit and incorporate staff input when developing and implementing departmental changes.
Strategic Leadership & Communication
- Support strategic nursing initiatives and effectively communicate system, regional, facility, and departmental priorities.
- Facilitate effective communication among nursing staff, physicians, leadership, patients, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, professional excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in strategic planning and organizational initiatives that support patient care and operational objectives.
- Recruit, select, onboard, orient, develop, and retain qualified nursing professionals.
- Provide leadership through coaching, mentoring, performance evaluations, corrective action, and professional development opportunities.
- Promote staff engagement and participation in shared governance and departmental decision-making.
- Establish and support effective shared governance models that encourage staff leadership and accountability.
- Identify and promote career advancement and professional development opportunities for nursing staff.
- Serve as a role model for professional nursing practice, leadership, communication, and patient-centered care.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, professional growth, and teamwork.
Additional Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide leadership coverage for the House Supervisor and other Directors/Managers as needed.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities consistent with the role and organizational needs.
This position requires work in both clinical and office environments. The role may involve exposure to:
- Blood and bodily fluids
- Hazardous chemicals and medical gases
- Dangerous fumes
- Radiation
- Dimly lit areas
- Other conditions commonly encountered in healthcare environments
Frequent use of computerized systems and other technology is required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently throughout the workday.
- Demonstrate sufficient physical agility and reaction time to respond promptly and appropriately to unexpected patient care needs.
- Maintain adequate hearing and visual acuity, including sufficient color vision.
- Demonstrate fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and the ability to grasp and handle equipment and other objects.
- Ability to utilize proper body mechanics when assisting patients with ambulation and transfers to or from beds, chairs, and wheelchairs.
- Ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds, as required.
- Follow standard precautions and infection-control practices due to potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
- Ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and verbal communication, both in person and by telephone.
- Ability to periodically use a personal computer and other electronic equipment.
