Job description

The Director of Nursing is responsible for providing leadership, managerial supervision and resource support to improve the effectiveness of a Musculoskeletal Specialty Hospital within a larger Acute Care Facility. In doing so, this vital leader will have direct responsibility over the nursing and patient care services including the floors and the operating rooms dedicated to the Specialty Hospital. This leader will also have dotted line responsibilities to Physical Therapy, Laboratory, Respiratory Care, and all other ancillary services. The Director of Nursing is the highest nurse position in the Specialty Hospital and works to align nursing with the mission, vision and values of the organization. Develops patient care programs, plans new patient services, establishes nursing policy and procedure, participates in cross-department decision making, conducts performance improvement activities, and represents nursing services at the Governing Board and the Medical Executive Committee meetings. Basic management functions include planning, organizing, leading and controlling department processes. Focuses on improving outcomes in financial, growth, people, service and quality metrics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operations Management: Proactively manages key operational systems including Quality, Service Design, Process Design, Location, Layout, People and Work Systems, Supply Chain Management, Inventory, Scheduling, and Maintenance. Establishes and monitors Continuous Quality Improvement performance standards.
  • Rounding for Outcomes (MBWA – Manages By Walking Around): Personally influences the improvement of our collective results through a visible presence in assigned service areas, engaging with processes, monitoring performance and building relationships. Commits to a safe environment for patients/customers/guests. Responds to service concerns in person.
  • Human Resource Management: Works with existing leaders to facilitate the individual development of assigned staff (those in a reporting relationship) through effective selection, orientation, performance evaluation, interpersonal communication, and coaching. Maintains employee satisfaction rating above peer group norms or achieves consistent improvement for areas of responsibility. Writes and reviews job descriptions on an ongoing basis for those in a reporting relationship. Conducts section meetings and Department meetings when appropriate. Conducts department rounds daily with leadership members in a reporting relationship.
  • Financial Stewardship: Manages direct expenses in assigned areas according to budgeted level and seeks new growth opportunities that maximize value for the organization. Manages the revenue cycle within area of influence. Updates Senior Management on variances containing qualitative and quantitative analysis with action plans for the next financial period.
  • Resource Planning: Prepares budget for areas of responsibility to reflect an increase in value for the patient. Evaluates tasks and processes to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency. Prioritized capital needs of the organization based upon goals, and technology required for patient care.
  • Customer/Patient Loyalty: Improves satisfaction loyalty of customers provided by areas of responsibility. Immediately investigates and resolves concerns or complaints with assigned services. Personally manages the appropriate internal follow-up regarding the concern or complaint. Acts as a change agent for patient focused care in assigned services.
  • Compliance Management: Maintains ongoing compliance with licensure, regulatory, and accreditation standards applicable to assigned areas of responsibility.Responsible for coordination of obtaining and maintaining disease specific advanced certifications.
  • Professional Practice: Maintains an acceptable level of professional knowledge and works toward continuously improving standards of care/service.
  • Committee Support: Demonstrates personal leadership by working with Senior Management or appropriate co-workers to manage an improvement in the effectiveness of each assigned organizational committee or group meeting.
  • In the absence of the Executive Director, will provide leadership and decision making as necessary in the interest of patient care.
  • Advises Executive Management Team on best practices in nursing and patient care and acts as a spokesperson for nursing issues.
  • Creates a nursing environment that includes collaboration and integration with other departments.
  • Partners with physicians to establish a safe environment for patients and smooth workflow.
  • Ensures that nursing standards are upheld.

EDUCATION

  • Masters in Nursing (MSN) is required.

EXPERIENCE

  • 5 – 7 years of experience where the primary function of the position was in a Vice President of Patient Care Services, Chief Nursing Officer or equivalent position in a hospital overseeing basic nursing functions. Surgical services and quality management experience preferred.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Employment

KNOWLEDGE

  • Principles and practices of hospital administration and basic knowledge of nursing services and
    ancillary departments.
  • Development, coordination and delivery of medical services.
  • Government regulations and codes including but not limited to The Joint Commission, State Agencies, ARRA, COLA, Pharmacy Board, and Nursing Board.
  • Administrative reporting and control procedures.
  • Principles and practices of administrative supervision and decision making.
  • Risk management issues in a hospital setting.
  • Hospital and healthcare policies to direct operations.
  • Healthcare marketing to include all musculoskeletal specialties.
  • Perioperative and department efficiency, AORN, SPD and ASPAN standards.

  • Exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment and discretion and decision making to achieve
    organizational objectives.
  • Analyzing situations accurately and taking effective action.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, providers, management and
    the public.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide arrange of professional,
    administrative, technical and clerical staff in both a direct and indirect influential situation.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, E-mail, and
    database software in performing work assignments.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate sufficiently to perform essential duties of the
    position, including providing comprehensive reports and plans.
  • Ability to organize and integrate organizational priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and exercise authority over assigned work functions.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Normal office environment. Some travel within community.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Some bending and stretching required. Manual dexterity using a calculator and computer keyboard.

ORGANIZATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • HOPCo and Specialty Hospital Mission, Vision and Values must be acknowledged and adhered to.
  • Must meet OSHA requirements with annual safety training.
