Job summary

The North Dakota Office of Attorney General is seeking an experienced attorney to lead the Natural Resources and Native American Affairs Division as Director. This in-person role, based in Bismarck, ND, provides strategic direction, manages budgets, and fosters collaborative, high-performing teams serving state agencies and the public.

Ideal candidates will have North Dakota licensure, 3+ years of legal experience (5+ preferred), strong leadership, and excellent communication skills.

Qualifications

• Licensed to practice law in North Dakota by six months after acceptance of the position.
• Three years or more of legal experience; five years+ preferred.
• Experience supervising employees is preferred.
• Excellent analytical and advocacy skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong leadership and ability to plan, organize and oversee.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and strategic direction to the Natural Resources and Native American Affairs (NRNA) Division within the North Dakota Office of Attorney General.
• Manage the division's budgets and resources.
• Foster collaborative, high-performing teams and build effective working relationships with state and federal partners.
• Oversee administrative case management, appellate advocacy, and outside counsel engagements.
• Research proposed legislation and provide testimony at legislative hearings.
• Represent the division in coordination with the Attorney General and other stakeholders.
