Job summary

Deerfield Academy seeks a Director of Music to lead a dynamic program for the grades 9–12. The role involves teaching two music courses each term, conducting the Deerfield community Orchestra, and supervising adjunct faculty while aligning the program with the academy’s values.

Responsibilities include organizing performances, collaborating with cross‑disciplinary arts colleagues, and engaging with families and Open House events to showcase student achievement and community involvement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• 3–5 years of leadership experience within a musical organization or school music program.
• Demonstrated expertise as a conductor of musical ensembles.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Set and maintain the mission and vision of the Music Program in alignment with Deerfield Academy’s values.
• Promote and organize public demonstrations and performances on campus and beyond.
• Collaborate with Visual and Performing Arts colleagues to foster collegiality and cross-department projects.
• Oversee budget planning and steward resources for the Music Program.
• Manage adjunct faculty, instructors, and staff; coordinate recruitment and onboarding.
