Job summary

Philaculture is seeking a Director of Marketing & Communications to lead strategies, content, and audience engagement across all channels in the Greater Philadelphia region.

The role oversees communications campaigns, social media, print materials, press relations, and donor communications, partnering with executive leadership to raise the organization’s visibility and support for PYOMI programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field; master’s degree preferred
  • Five years or more of marketing and/or communications experience preferred
  • Strong digital marketing, public relations, and brand management skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to manage deadlines
  • Experience with photography, videography, and editing is a plus
  • Proficiency in WordPress, Mailchimp, Adobe InDesign, Canva; CRM/ticketing and e-commerce familiarity
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

Responsibilities

Job Title: Director of Marketing & Communications
Reports to: Executive Vice President & COO
Type of Position: Full Time, Exempt

About PYO Music Institute: Based in Center City, Philadelphia, the PYO Music Institute (PYOMI) is the tri-state region’s premier youth orchestra organization for talented, young, classical, and jazz musicians. Through ten program divisions—including classical, jazz, and symphonic band ensembles—as well as Tune Up Philly, a free, community-based music education program, PYOMI inspires a diverse spectrum of 1,000+ students with character, discipline, commitment, and community through music.

Job Summary

The Director of Marketing & Communications (“Director”) will develop strategies and content to support increased engagement with the PYO Music Institute among all audiences. The Director will be responsible for various tasks across departments, including audience development, recruitment, communications, maintaining relationships with press/media outlets on behalf of the organization, community outreach, content curation, storytelling, and other institutional initiatives. The Director will increase the institution's visibility among students, parents, audiences, and donors by analyzing industry trends and implementing effective and current strategies.

Duties & Responsibilities
Communications
  • Develop and implement communications campaigns to promote and maintain the positive image of the PYOMI. The Director will manage communication efforts for PYOMI and liaise with traditional and non-traditional media, pitching feature stories, coordinating media/press contacts at concerts, rehearsals, and events, and securing press coverage across various media channels (digital, print, television, radio, etc.).
  • Develop short- and long-term communications strategies, including internal and external email communications, to support student recruitment, auditions, concert attendance, and financial contributions.
  • Maintain media lists and relationships; create and distribute press releases, media advisories, electronic press kits, blog posts, and feature stories; and document institutional accomplishments and press coverage through archives, quotes, and selected photos.
  • Coordinate partner, board, faculty, and staff communications with senior leadership, and support the development team with communications for appeals, fundraising events, and institutional campaigns.
Social Media Management
  • Develop and implement social media strategy; create content in collaboration with students, families, donors, partners, staff, and board members; manage daily posting and follower engagement; and analyze social media, website, email, and advertising performance to guide improvements.
  • Manage paid social media and digital advertising campaigns, including Meta and Google Ads.
  • Manage the Student Social Media Council, including recruitment, mentorship, content planning, and review of student contributions.
Marketing & Print Material Management
  • Manage the writing, design, editing, and production of PYOMI marketing materials, including brochures, fliers, concert programs, stationery, and website content, ensuring consistency with institutional messaging and brand standards.
  • Coordinate concert program content, including program information, bios, program notes, advertisements, and donor lists, and prepare final files for production.
  • Maintain brand guidelines, templates, and an organized library of logos, photographs, and other marketing assets.
Advertising
  • Develop and implement print and digital advertising sales campaigns to meet revenue goals, including creating advertising materials and offerings on the CRM/ticketing platform.
  • Solicit advertising from businesses, schools, individuals, and music festivals for concert and gala programs; create and manage invoices; and oversee fulfillment and sales tracking.
  • Manage branded merchandise and the online store, including product design, setup, pricing, promotions, order coordination, and sales tracking.
Administration
  • Manage production timelines for all marketing, communications, social media, public relations, and print deliverables.
  • Work with the Executive Vice President & COO to develop and track the marketing/PR budget, evaluate quarterly performance, and prepare board reports.
  • Maintain accurate, current website content in WordPress and public business profiles (e.g., Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, Wikipedia), including listing information, photos, and review responses; manage email lists and audience segments to support targeted communications.
  • Manage relationships and projects with external vendors, including graphic designers, web developer, and printers, overseeing scope, timelines, and proofing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field; master’s degree preferred

  • Strong digital marketing, public relations, and brand management skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Experience with photography, videography, and photo and video editing is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Mailchimp, Adobe InDesign, Canva, and WordPress; familiarity with CRM/ticketing and e-commerce platforms preferred
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary Range: $95,000 - $105,000
  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 15 days PTO with additional time off/office closure surrounding major holidays and during the summer months as scheduled
  • Compensation commensurate with education and experience
