Job summary

The Phoenix Symphony seeks a Director of Marketing to lead integrated campaigns, oversee the website and digital presence, and drive ticket sales, audience growth, and brand awareness.

Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, you will balance strategic planning with hands-on execution, supervise the Marketing and Communications Assistant, and collaborate across departments to support the Symphony’s mission.

About The Phoenix Symphony:

The Phoenix Symphony is Arizona’s largest performing arts organization and a cornerstone of the state’s cultural life. Through classical, Phoenix Pops, film, family, and community programming, the Symphony serves hundreds of thousands of patrons each year and connects audiences of all ages to the power of live orchestral music.

Purpose of the Position:

The Director of Marketing plays a vital role in driving ticket sales, audience growth, and brand awareness for The Phoenix Symphony. Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, this position leads the day-to-day execution of integrated marketing campaigns while overseeing the Symphony’s website, digital presence, organizational messaging, video production, and promotional activities.

This position requires a highly organized and creative marketing professional who can balance strategic planning with hands‑on execution, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and thrive in a fast‑paced performing arts environment. As a key member of the Marketing and Communications team, the Director of Marketing works closely with Development, Artistic Operations, Patron Services, Community Engagement and Education, and Production to support organizational goals and advance the Symphony’s mission.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Supervises the Marketing and Communications Assistant and provides guidance, training, project oversight, and performance feedback to support departmental goals.

Essential Functions:

Under general direction, the incumbent must be able to perform the following essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Leadership

  • Supports the Vice President of Marketing and Communications in implementing marketing initiatives that increase community awareness and drive attendance, subscriptions, audience growth, and revenue.
  • Supervises and mentors the Marketing and Communications Assistant, fostering professional growth and ensuring the timely completion of projects. Oversees the Marketing and Communications Assistant in their role managing website and digital marketing initiatives.
  • Collaborates with departments across the organization to support institutional priorities and ensure consistent messaging.
  • Represents the Marketing Department at concerts, special events, donor functions, and community activities.

Campaign Management

  • Manage campaign timelines, production schedules, and creative deliverables across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Manage the annual print production and advertising schedule, including season brochures, direct mail campaigns, program books, promotional materials, and print advertising placements.
  • Collaborates with internal departments and external vendors to ensure successful campaign execution.

Video Content Creation

  • Plan, produce, edit, and publish video content that supports marketing and promotional objectives.
  • Capture photo and video content during concerts, rehearsals, community programs, and special events.
  • Guide content development and creative execution for promotional campaigns featuring guest artists, musicians, and Symphony programs.
  • Provide on‑site marketing support for concerts, special events, and community engagement activities.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong creative problem‑solving abilities.
  • Experience with website content management systems and digital marketing platforms.
  • Experience with video production and editing software.
  • Working knowledge of email marketing platforms, CRM systems, and social media management tools.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaborative relationships across departments.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for concerts and events.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and video creation software.
  • Experience with website content management systems, email marketing platforms, and CRM databases.
  • Experience with ticketing software.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive marketing experience.
  • Experience in performing arts, symphony orchestra, nonprofit arts, entertainment, live events, or cultural organizations strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success executing integrated marketing campaigns that drive attendance and revenue.
  • Experience managing websites, digital content, email marketing, and social media campaigns.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Arts Administration, Public Relations, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Physical and Work Environment

This role requires the ability to work in a standard office environment and use typical office equipment, including a computer, the ability to read printed materials and a computer screen, and to communicate effectively in person, virtually, and by phone.

Regular attendance at concerts, events, and community activities, including evenings and weekends, is required to meet the needs of the Symphony’s performance schedule.

Compensation, Benefits, and Location:

Compensation

Salary will depend on experience.
