Job summary

WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, WV, seeks an experienced laboratory leader to oversee its clinical laboratory, directing daily operations, quality/compliance, budget and staff in partnership with pathologists and hospital leadership to deliver accurate, timely diagnostic services.

This role offers a sign-on bonus and relocation assistance for qualified candidates from outside the Wheeling area. Prior supervisory experience in a high-complexity lab is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science) or related field.
• MLS certification through ASCP or AMT.
• WV HCTP license or eligibility to obtain one.
• 5 years of laboratory experience, including 3 years in supervisory or management role.

Responsibilities

• Direct laboratory operations per hospital and accreditation standards.
• Maintain equipment performance and plan service or replacement.
• Manage department budget and justify variances.
• Monitor workload and adjust staffing for peak and slow periods.
• Lead QA/QC activities, including proficiency surveys and policy updates.
• Oversee the laboratory information system and ensure security and confidentiality.
• Implement new tests, methods, instrumentation, and programs.
• Hire, coach, discipline, and evaluate staff; oversee training and continuing education.
• Support licensure and CE compliance through in-services and education on new equipment.
• Lead change and improve productivity through meetings and projects.
• Oversee students in MT programs where applicable.

About the Role

Our client, WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital, is seeking an experienced laboratory leader to oversee its clinical laboratory. In this role, you will direct daily operations, quality, compliance, budget, and staff, and partner with pathologists and hospital leadership to deliver accurate, timely diagnostic services to patients of all ages. This position offers a sign-on bonus and relocation assistance for qualified candidates from outside the Wheeling area.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct laboratory operations, including specimen preparation, analytical procedures, and result reporting per hospital and accreditation standards
• Maintain equipment performance through quality standards, troubleshooting procedures, instrument certification, and service or replacement planning
• Manage the department within the approved budget, or provide justification for variances
• Monitor workload and productivity, adjusting operations and staffing for peak and slow periods
• Lead QA/QC activities, including proficiency surveys, policy updates, reporting, and recordkeeping, in consultation with pathologists
• Oversee the laboratory information system: identify needs, recommend improvements, train staff, and protect security and confidentiality
• Implement new tests, methods, instrumentation, and programs
• Hire, coach, counsel, discipline, and evaluate staff; oversee orientation, training, and continuing education
• Support licensure and CE compliance through in-services and education on new equipment
• Lead change and improve productivity through staff meetings, committees, task forces, and projects
• Where applicable, oversee students in the Medical Technology program and other allied health programs

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science) or a related field
• Medical Technologist/MLS certification through ASCP or AMT
• Current West Virginia High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) license, or eligibility to obtain one, issued by the WV Department of Health
• 5 years of laboratory experience, including 3 years in a supervisory or management role

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Management or a related field

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of both medical technology and management principles
• Demonstrated competency serving neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
