Job summary

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) invites applications for the Building Resilient Communities (BRC) Director, within Service and Justice. This Chicago-based, full-time, hybrid position leads ELCA’s international relief, sustainable development, and AMMPARO work, coordinating with global partners and church structures.

You will set strategy, supervise staff, manage grants and budgets, and represent ELCA at governance tables.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of development, social sciences, non-profit, emergency response, or sustainable development experience.
• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
• Strong understanding of ELCA vision, values, and theology.
• Experience with cross-cultural engagement in developing countries.
• Experience with budgeting, financial management, and supervising diverse staff.
• Ability to develop and interpret programs aligned with ELCA mission.
• Knowledge of international humanitarian response and sustainable development.
• Ability to engage in cross-cultural planning and decision-making.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism.
• Proficiency with Windows and common office software.

Responsibilities

• Strategic visioning, budgeting, direction-setting, and supervision for a large team.
• Program development and oversight: ELCA Companion Churches and international partners.
• Coordinate with Lutheran World Federation, ACT Alliance, and other agencies.
• Oversee communications and coordination for Hunger, AMMPARO, disaster response, and health ministries.
• Coordinate with external partners and church leadership on relief and development.
• Represent ELCA at governance and planning tables.
• Public speaking at events, synods, and congregations about mission and ministry.
• Other duties as required.
