Job summary

The Council on Foreign Relations seeks a Director to craft and execute communications strategy for the CFR president, collaborating with the Executive Office to elevate the president’s voice as the Council’s brand ambassador. The role includes earned media, social media, and content development across newsletters, essays, and long-form pieces.

Based in CFR’s Washington, DC or New York City office, four days a week onsite; institutional days are Tue–Thu.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• 7–10 years in media relations/public affairs, leading strategic comms for institutional principals.
• Familiarity with foreign policy media ecosystem and contacts with national/international outlets.
• Experience with media tracking tools/databases (MuckRack, Cision, Critical Mention, TV Eyes, Meltwater).

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute a proactive media engagement strategy for the president across geopolitical and geoeconomic issues.
• Map opportunities based on thought leadership and global calendar moments.
• Build and maintain relationships with a wide range of outlets.
• Identify innovative media engagement through partnerships, events, and collaborations.
• Draft briefing memos, talking points, Q&As, op-eds, and newsletter content.
• Collaborate to expand the president’s profile on social media with video, photos, and live events.
