About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Director of Finance to join a community hospital in Miami, Florida. This is an on-site leadership opportunity for a finance professional who understands the unique financial operations of a hospital environment and can take ownership of accounting, financial reporting, revenue cycle oversight, controls, and audit functions.

This role will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and serve as a key financial leader within the hospital. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a community or regional hospital, particularly in an environment where the finance team operates without the extensive corporate/shared-services support found in larger health systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process and ensure accurate, timely financial statements.
  • Oversee the general ledger, chart of accounts, reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable, payroll accounting, fixed assets, and cash management.
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages and variance analysis for hospital leadership.
  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting and ensure financial assumptions align with reported results.
  • Oversee revenue cycle operations, including billing, collections, cash posting, and denials.
  • Manage revenue recognition, including contractual allowances, bad debt, charity care reserves, and accounts receivable valuation.
  • Reconcile billing, cash posting, and accounts receivable to the general ledger on a monthly basis.
  • Monitor key revenue cycle metrics, including AR days, denial rates, clean claim rates, and cash collections.
  • Coordinate Medicare and Medicaid cost reports with external preparers.
  • Support reimbursement reviews, audits, settlements, and related reporting.
  • Develop and maintain effective internal controls across accounting and revenue cycle processes.
  • Lead the annual financial statement audit and serve as the primary contact for external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, payer requirements, and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Lead, train, and develop the accounting team.
  • Establish and improve documented accounting and month-end close procedures to increase accuracy and efficiency.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Hospital Controller or Assistant Controller.
  • Hands-on experience owning the month-end close and preparing financial statements.
  • Strong understanding of hospital revenue recognition, including contractual allowances, bad debt, and charity care.
  • Experience supporting external audits and maintaining internal controls.
  • Advanced Excel skills.

Preferred:

  • CPA or active progress toward CPA.
  • Acute care, community hospital, or regional hospital experience.
  • Experience working outside of a large health system's shared-services model.
  • Experience with Medicare and Medicaid cost reports and settlements.
  • Experience with MEDHOST or another hospital EHR/billing system.
  • Previous experience supervising an accounting or finance team.
What Success Looks Like

In the first year, success in this role will include:

  • Consistent and timely monthly financial close and reporting.
  • Fully reconciled balance sheet accounts with no unexplained differences.
  • A clean annual financial statement audit.
  • Accurate monthly reconciliation between revenue cycle activity and the general ledger.
  • Well-supported revenue reserves and accurate financial reporting.
  • Timely and accurate cost report information provided to external preparers.
Work Environment

This is a primarily office-based position within the hospital. Extended hours may occasionally be required during month-end close, audits, and critical reporting deadlines.
