Job summary

Cocoon House is seeking a Director of Finance to lead all financial functions, reporting, and risk management from its Everett on-site location. You will supervise accounting staff and partner with the CEO and board to ensure financial health and program support across the nonprofit’s continuum of care for youth.

The role requires deep nonprofit finance experience, GAAP knowledge, and strong leadership to shape budgeting, audits, and grant management.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 yrs of progressive financial management or accounting experience.
  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience managing public grants, billing, reconciliations, reporting and expense tracking.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain internal controls and GAAP compliance.

The Director of Finance plays an integral role in the organizational success of Cocoon House by providing strong leadership and strategic oversight on all matters relating to finance, risk management, planning functions, and advising functions. As part of the leadership team, the Director of Finance is responsible for effectively managing and communicating our financial health and stability across different agency levels within the organization. They will collaborate and engage with the finance committee and board of directors on a monthly basis, highlighting key performance indicators and areas of concern through various reporting mechanisms and visual aids. This position directly supervises and provides the necessary guidance for two accounting staff while serving as the direct financial advisor to the CEO.

Director of Finance Duties & Responsibilities

Full-Time | On-site in Everett, Snohomish County

Salary: $115,000 - 125,000 annually

Strategic Leadership & Collaborative Partnership
  • Actively involved with advancement of strategic planning initiatives related to finance
  • Lead, develop, and manage a $9 million budget across organizational programs in coordination with the CEO, board, and senior leadership
  • Assesses areas of risk for organization and provides analysis and recommendations to executive management in areas of finance.
  • Provides both short and long-term forecasting analysis, identifying areas of focus
  • Incorporates data and available technology resources in decision making processes including financial modeling, forecasting and risk scenario comparisons
  • Represents organization and maintains professional relationships with financial institutions, insurance providers, government partners, and external consultants
Financial Operations & Stewardship
  • Oversees financial and payroll reporting systems and ongoing financial operations, including cash flow analysis and optimization, budget tracking, general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and payroll, while ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements
  • Ensures grant compliance and monitors changes across the diverse field of federal, state, and county government contracts
  • Manages both annual financial and federal compliance audits
  • Manages 403b retirement plan and coordinates with providers and HR to ensure proper maintenance and accurate submission of related tax filings
  • Debt management service to include line of credit, bridge loan financing, and long-term loan covenants.
  • Actively monitors and updates financial policies and procedures as required
  • Stays current on trends and changes in accounting policy, especially as they relate to non-profits
  • Develops, strengthens, and maintains robust internal control processes
Cross-Functional Capacity Building
  • Supervises, coaches, and evaluates team performance and proper utilization of staff skill and expertise to designated projects while promoting financial literacy in the organization
  • Collaborates with development departments in preparation of private grant applications, providing all necessary budget narrative documentation and identifying programs that align with funding source initiatives
  • Provides tailored financial reporting for program managers on a monthly basis and ensure proper monitoring of actual budget detail

Requirements
Qualifications
  • Understanding and visible alignment of organizational values and mission serving homeless/at-risk youth in an environment that prioritizes meaningful relationships
  • Financial and operational management experience: 5-7 yrs of progressive financial management or accounting experience
  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred
  • High intellectual curiosity with a proven track record of mastering new financial systems, software, and regulatory frameworks quickly
  • Experience managing public grants and billing requirements, reconciliations, reporting, and expense tracking
  • Ability to prioritize deadlines with strong attention to detail
  • Problem-solving ability and aligning skill sets of teams to optimize functionality with limited staffing structure
  • Interpersonal skills and demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively as a trusted advisor, translating complex numbers into clear concepts for non-financial stakeholders, program staff, or leadership teams
  • Ability to present and communicate effectively at all levels with excellent verbal and written skills
  • Provide excellent customer service both internally and with external providers/stakeholders
  • BS/BA in related field, CPA or MBA preferred
  • Experience with Abila MIP preferred, Microsoft Office 365 Products, Paylocity payroll software
