New England Center and Home for Veterans & Affiliates in Boston, MA seeks a Director of Finance to lead day-to-day finance operations, ensure GAAP compliance, and safeguard assets across the Center and affiliates. You will direct the budget process, manage grants and contracts, oversee audits, and drive system improvements with IT, while mentoring a 3–4 person finance team.

You will report to the CFO and collaborate with executive leadership to optimize financial performance and accountability

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required; CPA/MBA preferred.
  • Minimum 10-12 years in nonprofit finance with grants/contracts experience.
  • Minimum 5 years leadership/management experience.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge for nonprofit environments.
  • Proficiency with Sage Intacct and advanced Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Drive annual budget process with VPs and provide ongoing analysis.
  • Identify budget variances monthly and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide updates to Executive Leadership on Actual vs Budget.
  • Oversee monthly financial statements for the Center and affiliates.
  • Coordinate year-end audit and government filings; ensure timely schedules.
  • Manage grants/contracts audits; ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Design and improve accounting systems with IT for reporting accuracy.
  • Oversee daily cash management, vendor payments, and discounts.
  • Lead and mentor a 3-4 person finance team.

Position Title: Director of FinanceDepartment: FinanceExemption: ExemptSupervisor: Executive Vice President and CFOPay Range: $125-150kJob Summary:The Director of Finance plans and directs the day-to-day operations, management, and supervision of staff in the General Accounting, Grant Billing and Receivable, Accounts Payable areas within the Finance Department. This role is responsible for the design and integrity of the accounting, reporting, and control functions; as well as maintenance of records and procedures to adequately safeguard the assets of the Center and all its subsidiary and related affiliates. The Director of Finance oversees the annual budget process aimed at achieving the overall goals and objectives of the organization.Responsibilities:Working with the Vice Presidents, drive the annual budget process to ensure their requests are appropriate with appropriate information to allow detailed analysis throughout the year.On a monthly basis, identify significant budget variances and provide analysis to implement corrective action plans where necessary.Provide periodic updates to the Executive Leadership of the Center reviewing their Actual vs Budget performance.Continuous modifications to the Sage Intacct Accounting Systems, i.e., General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, etc. to provide complete and accurate financial and statistical reporting for the end users.Oversee the preparation of monthly financial statements for New England Center and Home for Veterans & Affiliates.Consolidate and analyze Center operations and prepare a monthly summary package for distribution to the Finance Committee and Senior Management.Direct and manage the annual year-end audit (including the UFR, Uniform Guidance, Combined Financials, etc.) working with the Center public account firm. Ensure that all required schedules and footnotes are prepared timely and accurately.Manage all financial audits of grants/contracts by the various government agencies.Oversee the preparation of the Center’s annual tax returns, including 990 and Form PC.Design and recommend new or modified Accounting Systems, i.e., General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, etc. to provide complete and accurate financial and statistical reporting. Work closely with IT to implement changes or upgrades in existing financial systems, as well as to consolidate complex financial systems.Oversee the daily cash management process, including cash maximization, reporting, and projections to meeting operating and capital expenditures.Establish and maintain payment days to vendors, as well as maximize vendor discounts to decrease expenses for the Center where possible.Maintain constant contact with internal and external stakeholders, including auditors, legal counsel, insurance consultants, brokers, bankers, and administrators.Keep abreast of all regulations, procedures, and interpretations of the federal and state government, as well as accounting pronouncements and FASB’s. Review, evaluate and establish appropriate controls on proposed Center actions to ensure compliance with those regulations.Coordinate the billing and collection of all receivables. Ensure that discrepancies are resolved with affiliate organizations in a timely fashion to maximize receipt of cash.Monitors grant and contract activities to ensure funding is spent in accordance with established guidelines.Establish goals and objectives for all direct report areas and implement systems to measure success and effectiveness of areas in meeting designated goals and objectives.Responsible for continual review of Fiscal operations and implementation of streamlined processes where applicable.Keep Executive Vice President & CFO informed of areas of exposure regarding the finances of the Center.Other job duties and special projects as assigned.Essential Functions:Must possess and maintain broad professional and technical knowledge of Federal and MA State regulations related to Non Profits.Self-motivated individual with the ability to function in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision and ability to handle multiple, complex tasks and priorities.Strong analytical skills and be able to apply GAAP in a non-profit environment.Oversee the functionality of the Center’s general ledger system Sage IntacctSuperior computer skills on various software products and systems including automated general ledger, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.Must be a dedicated team player with the willingness and desire to learn and grow within the organization.Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbalHighly organized and a self-starterAbility to lift, stand, stoop, crawl, use fine finger manipulation.Education/Experience:Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required, CPA and/or Masters in Business Administration, preferred.Minimum of 10-12 years related experience in a non-profit with a strong background managing government grants and contracts.Minimum of 5 years leadership/management experience.Supervises:Successfully manage, motivate, and engage a team of 3-4 Finance professionals.Effectively mentor staff and foster a supportive and growth-oriented environment.
