Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of Facilities Operations is to ensure that the university campus remains safe, functional, clean, attractive, and conducive to learning, teaching, research, and student life. Facilities Operations is responsible for the planning, development, management, and maintenance of the institution’s physical assets and infrastructure to support the university’s mission and daily operations.

Under the leadership of the Director of Facilities, the department oversees the maintenance and repair of campus buildings and facilities, grounds and landscaping, heating and cooling systems, custodial services, recycling and waste removal, transportation services, and the university’s motor fleet. Facilities Operations also manage budgets, personnel, and operational resources to ensure facilities are maintained efficiently, sustainably, and in compliance with applicable regulations.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Director of Facilities Operations provides strategic leadership and oversight for the maintenance, operation, and continuous improvement of the university’s physical assets and infrastructure. The position is responsible for ensuring a safe, functional, clean, and efficient campus environment through the management of building systems, housekeeping services, grounds maintenance, recycling and waste removal, motor fleet and transportation services, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing operations in support of the university’s academic, research, and student success mission.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Professional, Planning and Organizing Work, Program Management, Safety and Health Management, Strategic Planning, Business Administration, Human Resources Management, Career and/or Talent Development.
  • Technical skills in facilities maintenance, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, grounds, general services, and housekeeping.
  • Project management.
  • Ability to supervise routine maintenance and technical trades supervisors, manage repair and renovation projects, construction and contract administration, and manage multiple tasks.
Minimum Education/Experience

Graduation from a four-year college or university and a minimum of five years of general facilities management and operations experience with supervisory experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

Licensed as a NC Professional Engineer desirable but not required.

  • This includes the supervision of the Environmental Health and Safety function. EH&S is the primary unit on campus responsible for ensuring workplace safety for all campus facilities and spaces.
  • Working responsively with University Police, Risk Management and Human Resources to insure the workplace safety of employees, students and other persons visiting the campus.
