Location: Remote (U.S.) or Hybrid – Denver, CO
Department: Professional Services
Reports to: VP, Professional Services
Base Salary: $185,000–$200,000, depending on experience and location
About the Role
Patmos is seeking a Director of Engineering, Professional Services to lead the engineering organization responsible for delivering customer-facing technology solutions across our Professional Services portfolio.
This role sits at the intersection of engineering leadership, solution architecture, software and platform development, portfolio execution, and client delivery. The Director will lead and develop the Professional Services engineering team while ensuring solutions are technically sound, scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with Patmos engineering and platform standards.
This is a hands-on senior engineering leadership role. The Director will not serve as the team's primary individual contributor but is expected to maintain sufficient technical depth to review architecture and code, challenge technical assumptions, troubleshoot complex problems, prototype when appropriate, and provide meaningful technical guidance to the engineering team.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical judgment with experience across customer delivery and product/platform engineering environments. They understand how to deliver pragmatic solutions for individual customers while recognizing opportunities to leverage or develop broader reusable capabilities.
Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Team Development
- Lead the day-to-day technical operation of the Professional Services engineering organization.
- Manage, mentor, and develop engineers and QA resources across experience levels.
- Establish engineering standards and expectations for architecture, development, testing, deployment, documentation, security, and code quality.
- Build a culture centered on technical excellence, ownership, collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer outcomes.
- Identify capability and skill gaps and recommend solutions through hiring, training, tooling, or strategic partners.
- Participate in recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and career development while building greater technical depth and leadership capability within the team.
Technical Leadership, Architecture & Product
- Provide senior technical leadership across client engagements and complex cross-functional initiatives.
- Provide technical leadership across both customer-facing software applications and shared platform capabilities, understanding the architectural and operational considerations unique to each.
- Translate business, product, and customer requirements into scalable technical architectures and implementation approaches.
- Architect and guide systems for scalability, reliability, security, maintainability, and performance.
- Provide technical direction across modern full-stack applications, APIs, integrations, databases, cloud infrastructure, and production environments.
- Evaluate technical and architectural tradeoffs across quality, speed, cost, scalability, security, and long-term maintainability.
- Serve as a senior technical authority and escalation point for complex architecture, engineering, security, performance, and production issues, bringing structure and sound technical judgment to ambiguous or high-impact decisions.
- Collaborate with product, design, infrastructure, and business stakeholders to develop effective technical solutions and contribute technical perspective to product and release planning.
- Advise senior leadership on significant technical risks, architectural decisions, engineering tradeoffs, and capability needs.
- Develop and maintain an engineering roadmap that translates business priorities, customer commitments, product needs, and technical requirements into clear execution priorities.
- Establish systems and operating practices that enable multiple engineering teams and initiatives to execute simultaneously with clear ownership, sequencing, dependencies, and accountability.
- Work backward from desired business outcomes and priorities to determine technical sequencing, resource requirements, milestones, and delivery plans.
- Prioritize engineering initiatives across competing customer, product, platform, and technical needs, making tradeoffs explicit when capacity or dependencies require them.
- Maintain visibility into progress, risks, dependencies, and resource constraints across the engineering portfolio and proactively adjust plans as priorities evolve.
- Own the technical execution and engineering quality of Professional Services client engagements.
- Partner with Professional Services leadership to translate client objectives into executable technical plans.
- Lead or oversee technical discovery, solution design, engineering estimation, and level-of-effort development.
- Identify technical risks, dependencies, assumptions, and scope concerns early and ensure they are appropriately addressed.
- Participate directly in client and prospect conversations where senior technical leadership is required.
- Ensure proposed solutions are technically viable and can be delivered responsibly within anticipated resources, timelines, and commercial constraints.
- Improve estimation and delivery predictability by comparing planned versus actual engineering effort and incorporating lessons learned into future projects.
Technical Experience
The successful candidate should have strong hands-on engineering experience and technical depth across modern software development, including:
- Modern full-stack web application architecture and development.
- One or more modern backend technologies such as Node.js, Python, Java, or C#/.NET.
- RESTful APIs, third-party integrations, and distributed application architectures.
- SQL and NoSQL databases and application data architecture.
- Strong working knowledge of cloud and infrastructure architecture, deployment environments, networking concepts, application security, observability, and production operations.
- CI/CD, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, and observability.
- Application security and secure software-development practices.
- Troubleshooting, debugging, performance optimization, and production incident resolution.
- End-to-end ownership of the software lifecycle, from architecture and implementation through deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and iterative improvement.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes is valuable.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant hands-on engineering experience and meaningful engineering leadership responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience managing, mentoring, and developing software engineers.
- Strong software architecture, system-design, and technical decision-making capabilities.
- Experience building and/or scaling production software products
- Experience delivering complex customer-facing applications and production software systems.
- Demonstrated experience leading multiple concurrent engineering initiatives and teams, including establishing systems for prioritization, sequencing, dependency management, and execution.
- Experience developing and managing engineering or technical roadmaps aligned to business and product priorities.
- Experience building and scaling both software applications and shared platforms, with an understanding of the architectural and operational differences between customer-specific software and reusable platform capabilities.
- Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs across quality, speed, cost, scalability, maintainability, and business requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts and tradeoffs to customers and non-technical leaders.
- Ability to operate effectively with significant autonomy and make sound decisions in ambiguous or rapidly changing situations.
