Job summary

iENG Design is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the office's engineering operations across Atlanta and Raleigh. The role drives technical excellence, aligns with corporate standards, and manages staffing, budgets, and client strategy.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years in mechanical engineering with 3-5 years in a leadership role, PE licensure preferred, and strong HVAC expertise. Join a growing practice with Fortune 500 clients across markets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering.
• Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
• PE licensure in one or more states strongly preferred.
• 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
• Multi-office collaboration experience preferred.
• Expert knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
• Advanced HVAC design expertise: VAV, chilled water plants, boilers, energy recovery, building automation.
• Experience with engineering calculation software.
• Understanding of mechanical codes and standards; ASHRAE/NFPA familiarity; local codes.

Responsibilities

• Manage all engineering personnel for the office location, including Team Leads and engineers.
• Oversee hiring, performance reviews, and professional development initiatives.
• Provide mentoring, coaching, and career guidance.
• Lead training programs and technical development opportunities.
• Address performance issues and implement improvement plans.
• Develop and improve QC standards, checklists, workflows, and SOPs; align with project timelines.
• Manage office-level P&L or department budget.
• Monitor project budgets and engineering hours across the office portfolio.
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards and code requirements.
• Set local operational policy and drive process improvements.
• Provide technical oversight on complex engineering projects.
• Participate in design turnover and build strategy meetings.
• Collaborate with business development on pursuits and client strategy.
• Advocate for proper engineering and VDC support from PM teams.
• Coordinate with other offices for staffing needs.
• Conduct weekly debriefs with VP/Senior VP, Office/Region.
• Encourage site visits and field reviews.
