Reports to: CTO
We're looking for a hands-on Director of Engineering to help us scale the core architecture, infrastructure, and systems behind NPHub, the largest clinical rotation platform for Nurse Practitioners in the U.S.
You won’t be managing people. You’ll contribute to our codebase, make architectural decisions, and serve as a technical counterpart to the CTO.
This is a rare role with high autonomy, deep ownership, and direct impact across infrastructure, backend scalability, and system reliability.
This role is ideal for someone who has operated as a:
- Staff or Principal Engineer looking for more infra/architectural ownership without people management
- Someone who has scaled systems from MVP to production load
- Platform-minded IC who has led database migrations, containerized infrastructure, or re-architected backend systems for scale, performance, and resilience
- Someone who enjoys working across the stack, shaping technical direction, and building a system that can support compliance, reliability, and growth
Responsibilities
- Own infrastructure stability: CI/CD, container orchestration, autoscaling, monitoring, DR
- Audit and harden our security posture (IAM, secrets, access control) in support of SOC 2 readiness
- Evaluate and evolve our data layer, including potential transition from MongoDB to a relational model with or without a graph layer.
- Collaborate with the CTO to define and evolve the long-term architecture
- Unblock and level up our 7-person engineering team through examples, code reviews, and shared standards
- Drive pragmatic decisions that reduce long-term tech debt and increase platform resilience
Requirements
- 8+ years of backend/platform engineering experience in SaaS or infrastructure-heavy environments
- Proven track record designing and scaling distributed systems, ideally in startups or high-growth platforms
- Strong experience in Node.js, MongoDB, and/or at least one relational DB (e.g., Postgres or MS SQL)
- Proficient in Docker, CI/CD pipelines, AWS/GCP, and observability tooling (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus)
- Deep understanding of infrastructure performance, reliability, and cost optimization
- Familiarity with SOC 2–aligned development practices (e.g., audit logging, access control, separation of environments)
- Able to work independently, propose architectural changes, and collaborate with leadership on long-term scale strategy
What you'll be helping build
We’re preparing our systems for scale, not just traffic growth, but real-world complexity. That includes:
- A rapidly expanding user base of NP and PA students and programs across the country
- Enterprise-level integrations with healthcare systems, universities, and credentialing partners
- Preparing for SOC 2 compliance, including auditability, environment segregation, and secure data flows
- Strengthening our platform resilience, observability, and infra cost efficiency
You’ll help design the architecture, shape the foundation, and drive decisions that make NPHub ready for its next 10x.
