Director of Engineering – Ecosystem Platform

Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

Location: Boston, MA

We are seeking a Director of Engineering for our Ecosystem Platform. In this role, you will lead the engineering efforts to drive our API platform for internal and external developers, as well as near real-time events and notifications to services and users. You will also oversee our external service offerings, including the Marketplace, Developer Portal, API, and integration details, along with self-service onboarding processes using cutting-edge technology.

This role requires a leader with a strong technical background and a proven track record in managing large-scale systems and platforms.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Building foundational technology to scale and accelerate our applications, services, and frameworks, maximizing impact for customers, partners, and internal developers.
  2. Partnering with product managers, architects, engineering managers, and stakeholders to deliver the vision and strategy for the Ecosystem platform solutions across athenahealth.
  3. Communicating complex ideas effectively and influencing decisions across diverse stakeholders.
  4. Helping the team make informed decisions in ambiguous situations.
  5. Optimizing solutions and driving continuous improvements to reduce operational spend.
  6. Addressing product, technology, and complexity issues through modularization, core services, API best practices, security, reference implementations, automation, and documentation.
  7. Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful projects.
  8. Identifying and managing risks and dependencies for key initiatives.
  9. Coaching and mentoring team members, including managerial staff, to foster their growth and performance.
  10. Building and nurturing an inclusive, engaged team culture where every member feels empowered, accepted, and respected.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with 15+ years of relevant experience leading cross-functional technical teams.
  • Proven experience in team development both technically and professionally.
  • Experience working in Agile environments and cloud-based architectures.
  • Demonstrated expertise in platform engineering, distributed systems, and cloud technologies.
  • Strong leadership skills to align processes, projects, and teams with business goals.
  • Ability to lead complex technical initiatives in fast-paced, dynamic settings.
  • Experience engaging with senior leadership and stakeholders on strategy and technical discussions.
  • A track record of leading high-performing teams, providing feedback, and supporting career development.
