Job summary

The City of St. Peters, MO is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the Engineering work unit, act as City Engineer and Floodplain Administrator, and ensure infrastructure projects meet regulatory and community needs.

You will manage budgets, contracts, and cross‑department coordination. Responsibilities include guiding planning and construction, reviewing development projects, overseeing water and sewer repair programs, and representing the City with FEMA and other agencies.

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawfully authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Undergraduate accredited degree in Civil Engineering or related field and five years of responsible engineering experience.
  • Missouri Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Valid Missouri driver license.
  • Experience with FE/PE exams and progression toward PE licensure.

Job Summary

Serving as the City Engineer and Floodplain Administrator, this position leads the Engineering work unit, manages budgets and contracts, coordinates with City departments and outside agencies, and helps ensure the City's infrastructure and development standards meet regulatory and community needs.


The Director of Engineering provides leadership and professional oversight for the City's engineering operations, guiding the planning, design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of critical infrastructure projects. Serving as the City Engineer and Floodplain Administrator, this position leads the Engineering work unit, manages budgets and contracts, coordinates with City departments and outside agencies, and helps ensure the City's infrastructure and development standards meet regulatory and community needs.


Normal Shift

Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm


Key Responsibilities


  • Lead and supervise the Engineering work unit, including staffing, training, scheduling, and evaluations.

  • Serve as City Engineer and provide engineering guidance on City projects and operations.

  • Oversee planning, design, right-of-way and easement acquisitions, construction, and inspection of City infrastructure projects

  • Review, and oversee the review of, development projects, record plats, easements, and work in City right-of-way.

  • Oversee the City's waterline repair program, sewer lateral repair program and targeted repair program

  • Responsible for gathering and reporting data annually in coordination with the City's Utility Department for the City's MS4 permit.

  • Serve as Floodplain Administrator and manage related permits, records, and regulatory requirements.

  • Represent the City with FEMA, SEMA, the Planning & Zoning Commission, and other agencies and committees.

  • Manage the Engineering budget, purchasing, capital projects, and contracts.

  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, specifications, policies, and procedures.

  • Coordinate with City departments, agencies, contractors, and residents to address engineering needs and concerns.


Minimum Requirements


  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawfully authorized alien worker.

  • Undergraduate accredited degree in Civil Engineering or related field and five (5) years of responsible engineering experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have a valid Missouri Professional Engineer's license.


    • Candidates who have completed a degree and passed the FE and PE exams before fulfilling the experience requirement (four years of satisfactory engineering experience after earning a bachelor's degree, or three years with a master's degree in engineering), will be classified as an Assistant Director of Engineering and placed in the designated grade for that role until they have met the required experience and the state has issued the PE license.


  • Motor Vehicle Operator's license valid in the state of Missouri.

  • Thorough knowledge of Federal, State and local Floodplain rules

  • Considerable management and negotiation skills.

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal and traffic

  • Considerable knowledge of construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment employed in municipal public works.

  • Considerable knowledge of engineering design, surveying, drafting, and specification preparation.
