Director of Electrical Engineering, Protection & Controls

About the Position

We are searching for a Director of Electrical Engineering to manage protection and controls engineering for our growing Energy Power Services Team. The ideal candidate will have 15+ years of related experience and will be based in one of the following Pond offices: Atlanta, GA; Peachtree Corners, GA; Tampa, FL; The Woodlands, TX; or Denver, CO. This person will be driven to grow, collaborate, and innovate while leading a dynamic team of engineering professionals. In this role, you will lead the detailed design of layouts for control equipment enclosures, schematic drawings, and wiring diagrams for specific transmission and substation projects. Your team’s work will require a strong understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying, and electrical engineering principles. You’ll be involved in the design and review of high voltage substations (23kV, 115kV, 230kV, and 500kV) and will develop expertise in protective relay settings calculations and analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.). The Director will manage multiple projects across different design stages, ensuring timely completion and meeting project schedule deadlines. You will provide design support during project implementation and collaborate with field personnel to ensure smooth execution. The role requires proficiency in CAD software and a focus on efficient, high-quality production of engineering work. You will also be responsible for conducting site visits for data gathering, creating procurement and construction specifications, evaluating contractor bids, and reviewing shop drawings. Additional responsibilities include preparing engineering fee estimates, field support during construction, creating quality control checklists for substation P&C design projects, and preparing detailed engineering release packages. The Director will also offer technical expertise and guidance to identify, analyze, and resolve complex problems, both within and outside the scope of typical responsibilities.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredited University
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred
  • 15+ years of electrical protection and controls experience
  • Advanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals in utility substation and transmission line equipment
  • Experienced in design of protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and associated settings
  • Advanced understanding of SCADA communication design
  • Experience managing a design budget and schedule
  • Ability to work well within a team environment, positive attitude, multi-task, and self-motivated to produce high quality work
  • Ability and desire to learn and grow professionally
