The Director of eCommerce Technology is responsible for the technology strategy, architecture, delivery, and ongoing operation of the company's digital commerce platforms. This leader owns the technology capabilities that support the end-to-end online customer experience, including the eCommerce platform, website and mobile experiences, product and inventory integrations, order management, payments, search, personalization, analytics, and integrations with core retail systems.
The Director will partner closely with eCommerce, Marketing, Merchandising, Store Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, Cybersecurity, and IT leadership to deliver a fast, reliable, secure, and scalable digital commerce experience.
This role combines technology leadership, retail business knowledge, architecture, vendor management, and execution. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable developing a multi-year technology roadmap, leading major platform initiatives, managing technical teams and partners, and resolving critical production issues during peak retail periods.
Responsibilities
- Develop and own the eCommerce technology strategy and multi-year roadmap aligned with company growth and digital commerce objectives.
- Evaluate emerging commerce technologies and recommend investments that improve customer experience, revenue, operational efficiency, or speed to market.
- Partner with business leadership to translate digital commerce objectives into scalable technology capabilities.
- Establish architectural principles and standards for eCommerce applications, integrations, data, and infrastructure.
- Provide overall technology leadership for the company's eCommerce ecosystem, including:
- eCommerce platform, site search and navigation, shopping cart and checkout, payment processing and fraud prevention.
- Ensure platforms are scalable, maintainable, secure, highly available, and capable of supporting peak retail traffic.
- Establish standards for APIs, integrations, application architecture, development, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
- Lead technology capabilities supporting omnichannel customer experiences such as Buy Online, Pick Up in Store
- Ensure effective integration between eCommerce and enterprise systems including POS, ERP, merchandising, inventory, warehouse management, order management, CRM, loyalty, and financial platforms.
Delivery & Engineering Leadership
- Lead internal development and outsourced resources for engineering, architecture, QA, DevOps.
- Establish clear priorities and delivery commitments across technology teams and external partners.
- Improve development velocity while maintaining reliability, security, and technical quality.
Site Performance & Reliability
- Own technical performance, stability, availability, and scalability of digital commerce platforms.
- Establish and monitor KPIs for site speed, application performance, availability, errors, transaction success rates, and other critical technical metrics.
- Ensure the eCommerce environment is prepared for peak events including holidays, promotional events, product launches, and periods of unusually high traffic.
- Lead technical incident response and root-cause analysis for significant eCommerce production issues.
- Develop proactive monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and business continuity practices.
Customer Experience, Conversion, Data, Analytics & AI
- Use customer behavior, analytics, site performance, and conversion data to prioritize technology improvements.
- Support experimentation and A/B testing capabilities that enable continuous optimization.
- Ensure technical implementations support SEO, accessibility, responsive design, and Core Web Vitals.
Cybersecurity, Privacy & Compliance
- Partner with Information Security to ensure digital commerce platforms meet company cybersecurity standards.
- Support compliance requirements including PCI DSS and applicable consumer privacy regulations.
- Ensure security considerations are incorporated throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Manage strategic relationships with eCommerce platform providers, systems integrators, SaaS vendors, payment providers, search providers, cloud providers, and other technology partners.
- Identify opportunities to optimize technology costs while maintaining or improving capabilities.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive technology experience, preferably within retail, eCommerce, consumer products, or another high-volume digital business.
- 5+ years of technology leadership experience managing teams, platforms, programs, and external partners.
- Strong understanding of modern web architecture, APIs, cloud platforms, databases, application integration, and software development practices.
- Experience managing high-volume, highly available consumer-facing applications.
- Experience with headless or composable commerce architectures.
- Experience implementing DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, and modern observability practices.
- Knowledge of SEO, web accessibility, analytics, tag management, and digital experimentation.
