Dayton, Ohio · Full-time, reports to the President and CEO
About Eastway and this role
Eastway Behavioral Healthcare has been caring for people in our community for nearly 70 years. Our mission: to advance the overall health and security of individuals and the community by providing excellent behavioral healthcare, rehabilitation and housing services and to advocate on behalf of individuals with special needs.
For most of that time, philanthropy has not been part of the funding story. Now we are building a donor program that gives individuals, businesses and community partners a direct way to change lives. You will be our first Director of Development, and you will build upon the foundation we have created so far. This is a rare chance to shape a program rather than inherit one. You will set the strategy, build the systems and, most of all, build relationships with people who want their giving to matter.
You will work closely with our President and CEO, our board, our fundraising counsel, and our program leaders. Our board is governance-focused today. Part of your job is helping it grow into a fundraising partner.
What you will do
Major and individual gifts
- Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors, with personal ownership of every relationship.
- Run the full cycle: identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward. Make the ask in person.
- Bring donors close to the work through tours, conversations with staff and invitations that fit each person's interests.
- Report on portfolio activity and results to the CEO every month.
Strategy and pipeline
- Write and carry out a development plan that grows individual, corporate and foundation giving beyond grants.
- Build a donor pipeline from a near-blank slate, starting with board, vendors, community partners and event attendees.
- Lead corporate sponsorship for our events, including the 70th anniversary celebration.
- Partner with our grant writer so grants and donor giving support each other.
Systems and stewardship
- Manage Little Green Light, our donor database, where gift entry and gift acceptance procedures are already in place. Keep the data clean and use it to run reports.
- Build stewardship routines on top of those procedures, such as donor recognition and impact updates.
- Track and report metrics that matter, such as donors retained, gifts by level and cost to raise a dollar.
Board and organization
- Coach board members on giving and on opening doors, with a clear, comfortable role for each.
- Help program staff share stories and impact in ways that respect client privacy and dignity.
- Work with leadership on communications, so donors hear one consistent voice from Eastway.
Who you are
- High emotional intelligence. Our donors give because they care about people facing mental health and addiction challenges. You listen first. You read a room, stay steady in hard conversations and make donors feel respected, never pressured. You handle sensitive topics with warmth and discretion, and you work well with clinicians, executives and volunteers alike.
- Front-line major donor experience. You have personally asked for and closed gifts of $10,000 and up. You have managed your own portfolio, and you can describe specific relationships you built over several years. You are at ease in one-on-one meetings, and you know when to bring in the CEO or a board member.
- Systems thinking. You see how the pieces connect: data, process, people and timing. You build simple systems that others can follow and that keep working after you leave the room. You use a CRM to drive action, not just to store records, and you turn numbers into clear plans.
Also required
- Four or more years in nonprofit development, with at least two in major gifts.
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience.
- Strong writing, especially donor letters, proposals and thank-yous.
- Comfort working independently as a team of one, with a CEO who wants a true partner.
- Willingness to attend some evening and weekend events.
- Reliable transportation for donor visits across the region.
Nice to have
- Experience with Little Green Light or a similar donor database.
- Corporate sponsorship or events fundraising experience.
- Connections in the Dayton-area philanthropic community.
- Personal or professional familiarity with behavioral health.
Compensation
Salary: $80,000 to $100,000, based on experience. Eastway also offers a generous benefits package.
Eastway is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. Our hiring process includes a work sample: an example of a major gift proposal and an annual appeal email that you created.
