Job summary

Marketlab, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, seeks a Director of Design Engineering to lead the technical integrity of products from concept through release and lifecycle changes. You will guide a scalable design engineering function, while remaining hands-on to provide technical judgment and capacity.

You will lead a team, set standards, and manage external partners to ensure design controls, verification, and regulatory readiness across domestic and international supply.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.
• Progressive leadership of physical-product design through release, transfer, and lifecycle changes.
• Strong experience with CAD, drawings, tolerancing, materials, and manufacturing methods.
• Leadership in setting engineering standards, reviews, and external partner management.

Responsibilities

• Define and improve Marketlab's Design Engineering operating model, standards, and gates.
• Lead engineering work across the product lifecycle from concept to transfer and change.
• Serve as senior Design Engineering approver for requirements, specs, and design changes.
• Chair design and technical reviews at milestones; ensure test completeness and risk balance.
• Set verification/validation strategies and appropriate evidence plans.
• Partner with Product Management to translate problems into feasible development plans.
• Collaborate with Quality/Regulatory to ensure design controls and validation evidence.
• Coordinate with Sourcing and Manufacturing to assess capability and readiness.
• Direct external engineering and testing suppliers; manage milestones and deliverables.
• Lead and develop the Design Engineering team and allocate capacity.
