Job description

MIO’s Portfolio Analytics Group is seeking a Director of Data Operations to lead our data acquisition and validation engine. The individual will be responsible for defining our end-to-end strategy for manager data, including identifying new data sources, building and overseeing the pipes to ingest data, establishing and running processes to standardize unstructured and bespoke data, developing quality control mechanisms, and ensuring that questions from stakeholders are thoughtfully and quickly answered. In this capacity, the Director of Data Operations will oversee an internal team of analysts and manage external service provider relationships.

The group

The Portfolio Analytics Group (PAG) core function is to provide decision support to the Investment team by maintaining and evolving MIO's manager selection analytics and provisioning data to create an edge in our investment processes. The group also acts as the fundamental center of competence, producing routine performance and risk reports for Risk and Advisory. The PAG team co-owns MIO's attribution system, which is central to managing our investment team and systemic risks across our portfolio.

Primary responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Data Team (7-9 staff members)
  • Design and oversee a robust process to ingest data, working closely with the internal data team and external service providers
  • Define and implement the standards for manager data collection, cleaning, and storage at MIO
  • Develop and ensure the execution of data quality control mechanisms
  • Work cross-functionally to understand and execute upon the various data requirements across the organization
  • Design and manage multiple projects within the team, while meeting deliverables and reporting status to senior management
  • Develop and mentor junior staff while providing constructive feedback and evaluation
  • Lead the team in providing thoughtful responses to questions from stakeholders

Profile of the successful candidate

  • Ability to translate data requests from key stakeholders into robust, reliable, and repeatable data delivery operations
  • Strong process management orientation and skills
  • Effective at prioritizing quick-wins vs. longer-term deliverables
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills
  • Strong organizational skills, team and project management proficiency
  • Familiarity with large sets of data and database structures
  • Foundational understanding of financial analysis/accounting terms and concepts
  • Experience sourcing and maintaining external service provider relationships
  • Proficiency with office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) required; proficiency in data management tools is a strong plus. (e.g., Tableau)

Desired background

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Information Systems, Business Administration, Computer Science, or related field, or relevant work experience
  • At least eight years of experience at an industry leader in financial services; ideally with a focus in data operations and data analysis
