Job Description

Data is critical to that mission, and we are seeking a Director of Data to transform and scale our data organization. As a 100% remote company, we've proven that distributed teams can build exceptional products, and we need a technical leader who can help us use data to drive the future of Articulate and online learning.

The Director of Data is responsible for leading and scaling our data team across data engineering, analytics engineering, and data science. This role reports to the CTO and works closely with our Data Strategy Manager to ensure alignment between business needs and technical implementation. The focus is on building robust data systems, developing engineering talent, and driving operational excellence. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in data, proven leadership experience, and the ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

What you'll do:

• Provide technical leadership and strategy for data platforms, infrastructure, and tooling.
• Establish best practices, governance, and quality standards.
• Evaluate and recommend new technologies to enhance data capabilities.
• Collaborate with the Data Strategy Manager to translate business needs into technical solutions.
• Ensure data security, compliance, and privacy standards are maintained.
• Drive adoption of new data tools and technologies.
• Create training and documentation for self-service data access.
• Develop educational resources and technical guidance for cross-functional teams.

Team Leadership & Development:

• Attract, build, and develop a high-performing data team.
• Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
• Mentor and coach team members to grow their skills and careers.
• Align team capabilities with business priorities.

Operational Excellence:

• Oversee data architecture and infrastructure design and maintenance.
• Improve efficiency and reliability of data pipelines.
• Implement monitoring, alerting, and incident management processes.
• Manage technical debt and scalability issues.
• Ensure timely and high-quality delivery of technical projects.
• Design and execute technical roadmaps balancing quick wins and long-term scalability.
• Establish metrics to measure the effectiveness of data initiatives.

Qualifications:

• 12+ years of data engineering experience, with 4+ years leading teams.
• Deep expertise in analytics engineering, data science, and data infrastructure.
• Strong background in cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Experience with modern data tools (Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, etc.) and BI tools (Looker, Tableau, etc.).
• Proven ability to build and scale engineering teams and deliver measurable business impact.
• Experience with data governance, best practices, and technical documentation.
• Strong project management skills and experience in high-growth SaaS environments.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
