The Specialized Recruiting Group is hiring a Director of Construction Operations for a homebuilder client of ours in Charlotte, NC.

Overview

The Director of Construction Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for residential construction activities across multiple communities. This role is responsible for driving construction performance, managing field operations and trade partners, controlling costs, maintaining schedules, and ensuring homes are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the company's quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the Purchasing, Estimating, Design and Permitting Departments
• Develop and implement construction strategies, processes, and standards that improve efficiency, quality, cost, and cycle time.
• Lead and develop construction management and field operations teams.
• Oversee subcontractor and trade partner relationships, performance, capacity, and accountability.
• Partner closely with purchasing, estimating, sales, land development, design, permitting, warranty, and executive leadership.
• Manage construction schedules, budgets, purchase orders, change orders, and overall project costs.
• Identify opportunities to improve construction processes, reduce costs, increase productivity, and strengthen margins.
• Ensure homes are constructed in accordance with plans, specifications, building codes, and company standards.
• Establish strong relationships with key trade partners and suppliers while supporting procurement and cost-management strategies.
• Oversee quality control, safety, inspections, punch-out, and homeowner delivery processes.
• Analyze construction and operational data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
• Collaborate with senior leadership on forecasting, capacity planning, budgets, and operational strategy.
• Drive accountability and consistency across communities while maintaining a strong focus on customer satisfaction and profitability.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive experience in residential construction, production homebuilding, purchasing, or homebuilding operations — required.
• Proven leadership experience within a residential homebuilder.
• Experience managing multiple communities, construction operations, purchasing functions, or significant trade-partner relationships.
• Strong understanding of residential construction, purchasing, scheduling, cost management, and production processes.
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence cross-functional departments, and manage complex operational challenges.
• Strong financial and analytical skills with an understanding of construction costs, budgets, margins, and profitability.
• Exceptional negotiation, communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to operate strategically while remaining engaged with day-to-day field and operational needs.
• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Business, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
