Director of Construction

Description

D.R. Horton, Inc., the largest homebuilder in the U.S., is engaged in the construction and sale of high-quality homes designed principally for the entry‑level and first‑time move‑up markets. This role will oversee all phases of construction projects from inception to completion, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The position sets the standard for safety, quality, and productivity across all job sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for the implementation of all construction field policies and procedures.

Develop and maintain construction schedules, resource allocation plans, and progress reports.

Communicate consistently with all departments to achieve division goals.

Oversee field operations, production times, and ensure quality control so the homes built meet D.R. Horton quality standards and are ready for homeowner orientation and occupancy.

Communicate with employees and subcontractors at a consistent level of expectations and direction regarding schedules, construction methods, company policies and procedures, safety standards, quality control and other performance standards.

Evaluate scopes and performance of all subcontractors and vendors.

Review and approve project budgets, contracts, change orders, and payment applications.

Promote an atmosphere of accountability that focuses on quality and customer satisfaction.

Recognize talent, recruit, retain and motivate a team across all functions required to run a successful division.

Promote construction team relationships and partnerships with subcontractors, verifying communication and accountability.

Review customer satisfaction surveys, analyze and identify trends, and implement solutions to improve customer satisfaction scores.

Drive process to ensure the most cost‑effective product. Provide recommendations to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

Ensure all employees represent D.R. Horton, Inc. and the division professionally to the public and local government offices.

Monitor relevant changes in the marketplace and react quickly to take advantage of opportunities.

Oversee safety training to promote safe and efficient construction processes.

Conduct business in a professional and ethical manner to serve customers and increase the goodwill and profit of the company.

Ability to travel overnight.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises 2 or more employees.

Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Construction or a related field from a four‑year college or university.
  • 10+ years of progressive construction experience.
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes, building codes, and safety regulations.
  • Basic accounting or finance knowledge.
  • Experience in a leadership role involving operations, sales, and production.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving skills by using persistence and ability to overcome obstacles.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form or via DRH applications.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and email.
  • Physical requirements: Ability to stand and walk for 4 hours straight or up to a full 8‑hour day; sit for extended periods; kneel and bend at the waist; walk up and down stairs; walk on uneven terrain; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; good vision including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
  • Noise level is generally moderate.

Compensation
  • Annual Salary Range: $115,000 – $130,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
