Job summary

Harvard University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a Director of Community Engagement. This role leads all facets of program administration for student services, supports partnerships with hundreds of community organizations, and oversees alumni engagement initiatives.

The position reports to the Associate Dean of Civic Engagement and Service and requires strong leadership and collaborative skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience.
• Master’s Degree in a field related to community engagement and/or public service preferred.
• 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience related to community engagement work.

Responsibilities

• Lead and oversee all aspects of program administration for student services and community engagement initiatives.
• Develop and sustain over 300 community partnerships related to summer, winter break, and post-graduate programs.
• Collaborate with campus departments to support conferences, regionally based partnerships, and programs.
• Engage alumni and manage donor and faculty relationships while supporting broad engagement strategies.

Job Description

Job Summary:

Lead all facets of program administration for student services,serve as a subject matter expert, and provide counseling forstudents and student groups.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

The Director of Community Engagement serves as a key leadershiprole within Phillips Brooks House reporting to the Associate Deanof Civic Engagement and Service. They oversee programs related tosummer fellowship experiences, winter break volunteeropportunities, and post-graduate public service opportunities forcurrent Harvard undergraduates and recent graduates in the publicinterest sector. These programs focus extensively on studentdevelopment, building community partnerships, and alumni/aeengagement. Harvard College provides support to a wide range ofcommunity service organizations, alumni/ae Clubs, Shared InterestGroups (SIGs), and public service initiatives

Duties and Responsibilities

Core Program Oversight:

• Oversees winter break and summer programs. Currently theseprograms include the Mindich Service Fellowship Program, HarvardClubs Summer Community Service Fellowship Program, the Arthur LimanPublic Interest Law Fellowship Program, Fellows at the Forefront,Stad Fellows Program, Fong Family Winternship Program, internshipplacements with Harvard International Offices, and the SPARKprogram for pre-matriculated students.
• Oversees events and conferences related to community engagementwork to meet the larger mission of the Center.
• Designs complex reports to support student services goals;analyze student services metrics to support strategic planning
• Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures andapplicable legal rules and regulations

Community Partnership Oversight:

• Develops and sustains over 300 community partnerships relatedto summer, winter break, and post-graduate programs.
• Collaborates with several departments on campus to supportcampus conferences and regionally based partnerships and programs,such as nonprofit board recruitment fairs and graduate schoolnetworking nights.
• Stewards relationships with current and future partnershipsites. Visits sites yearly for quality control and partnersatisfaction.
• Serves as a strategist for community partnership buildingacross the department and Harvard College.

Alumni and Key Stakeholder Engagement:

• Engages alumni in conjunction with the Harvard AlumniAssociation and Harvard’s Alumni Affairs and Development team.
• Stewards communications support with donors, and studentadvising as needed.
• Supports the Associate Dean of Civic Engagement and Service infostering donor relationships and faculty relationships
• Serves as a liaison to other civic engagement units acrossHarvard University

Working Conditions:

• Work is performed in an office setting
• May be required to work nights and weekends

Physical Requirements:

• Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and otherphysical exertion

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

• 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience related tocommunity engagement work.
• Master’s Degree in a field related to community engagementand/or public service.
• Familiarity with developing programs working with students,alumni, faculty, and community partners will be givenpreference.
• Strong organizational and time management skills. We are alsoseeking candidates who can manage relationships with strongattention to detail and discretion
• Outstanding interpersonal and problem-solving skills who canwork with a diverse array of constituencies

• Other Information: The work schedule and location willbe set by the department at its discretion and based uponoperational needs and objectives and consistent with CollegePolicy, which requires 5 days on-site in Cambridge, MAduring term time (first day of classes through commencement), withthe exception of winter break in December, spring break in March,and the summer months when students are away from campus, wherestaff is expected be on campus two days a week. When notworking at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees inhybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state incompliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details about the College policy will be discussedduring the interview process. Certain visa types and fundingsources may limit work location.
