Job description

Director of Clinical Programs
About Mainspring

Mainspring is a collaborative social service hub designed to make it easier for individuals and families to access the resources they need to thrive. Through co-location, centralized intake, coordinated case management, shared information, and strong community partnerships, Mainspring connects people to the resources, services, and ongoing support they need.

Our model is built on collaboration, creating a coordinated point of entry so individuals and families do not have to navigate fragmented systems on their own.

Position Overview

The Director of Clinical Programs leads the clinical and coordinated-care components of Mainspring's collaborative service model, including centralized intake and assessment, case management, referral coordination, and case conferencing.

This is first and foremost a leadership role. The Director leads a skilled and experienced team of human services professionals, fostering a culture of trust, accountability, communication, and collaboration. The Director also serves as Mainspring's clinical lead, providing clinical supervision and consultation, supporting staff with complex client situations, and providing backup clinical and General Assistance coverage as needed.

The Director guides the continued development and improvement of clinical programs and works closely with Mainspring leadership and partners to ensure services are coordinated and well integrated across the broader Mainspring model.

The Director reports to the Deputy Director and supervises Mainspring's intake and case management staff, Administrative Lead, and clinical interns as applicable.

Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Supervision
  • Lead, supervise, coach, and support Mainspring's intake and case management team, establishing clear expectations while respecting the expertise and autonomy of experienced staff.
  • Foster a healthy team culture grounded in trust, direct communication, collaboration, accountability, and mutual respect.
  • Provide regular feedback and professional development, and address conflict, communication challenges, and performance concerns directly and constructively.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, evaluation, and development of clinical program staff and interns.
Clinical Leadership & Case Consultation
  • Serve as Mainspring's clinical lead, providing clinical supervision, consultation, and support around complex client situations.
  • Plan and facilitate collaborative case conferencing focused on problem-solving, service coordination, and complex client needs.
  • Promote consistent, strengths-based, person-centered, trauma-informed, and ethical practice.
  • Provide backup clinical and General Assistance coverage as needed during staff absences or unexpected coverage gaps.
  • Share responsibility for Mainspring's General Assistance after-hours emergency line on a rotating basis.
  • Provide clinical supervision to interns and, when qualifications and licensing requirements allow, staff pursuing professional licensure.
Clinical Program Development & Oversight
  • Provide leadership and oversight for Mainspring's intake and assessment, case management, referral coordination, and case conferencing functions.
  • Evaluate and strengthen workflows, practices, and systems to improve coordination, consistency, and client outcomes.
  • Lead the development and implementation of new clinical program practices, helping move emerging programs and processes from start-up to sustainable practice.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate standards, protocols, and procedures for clinical programs.
Quality Improvement & Collaboration
  • Use program data, staff and client experience, and partner feedback to evaluate effectiveness and guide program improvements.
  • Work with staff responsible for data systems and reporting to identify meaningful measures and support consistent documentation and data collection.
  • Build strong relationships with Mainspring partners to strengthen referrals, case coordination, communication, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Identify service gaps and opportunities for stronger coordination and work with Mainspring leadership and partners to address them.
Ideal Qualifications & Experience
  • Master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related behavioral health or human-services field.
  • Current Maine clinical licensure such as LCSW, LCPC, or LMFT strongly preferred. Independent clinical licensure may be required if providing supervision that qualifies toward professional licensure.
  • Significant experience in social services, behavioral health, housing, homelessness, community-based services, or a related human-services environment.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and management experience, including leading experienced professional staff and navigating team conflict and organizational change.
  • Strong clinical judgment and experience providing clinical supervision, case consultation, or multidisciplinary case review.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and improving programs or service-delivery systems.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, relationship-building, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with data-informed program management, outcome measurement, and client information systems preferred.
The Leader We're Looking For

The right candidate will know how to ask good questions, listen carefully, make decisions when needed, address difficult issues directly, and create the conditions in which experienced professionals can do their best work.

We are looking for a leader who combines empathy with accountability, confidence with humility, and clinical expertise with curiosity. This person should enjoy developing both people and programs and believe deeply in the power of collaboration.

Hours, Compensation & Benefits
  • Full-time, salaried, exempt position.
  • Salary range: $95,000–$110,000 annually, depending on experience, clinical licensure, and qualifications.
  • Flexible work environment, including the possibility of limited remote work. Because this is a highly collaborative leadership position, a significant on-site presence at Mainspring is expected.
  • Competitive benefits package including health insurance, paid time off, retirement contributions, and opportunities for professional development and training.
