Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree in Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years managing union labor with extensive knowledge of related contracts and employment laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of terminal operations practices and principles.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the overall equipment assets including inventories at locations and utilization of equipment.
  • Leads and directs General Managers to meet productivity, safety, and efficiency standards.
  • Develop and maintain positive customer/port relations and ensure contract terms are met.
  • Assist in development of budgets and operate within approved fiscal limits.
  • Coach General Managers to achieve performance and productivity objectives.
  • Owns safety performance for the M&R department across locations and enforces safety programs.
  • Lead incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are tracked to closure.
  • Ensure effective communication and teamwork across management and departments.
  • Support VP with goals and objectives development and regular updates.

Description

The Director of Chassis Leasing is responsible for the leadership, achievement and development of operational and financial goals and objectives for an assigned department, area on terminal, or account. The Director ensures high levels of safety, productivity, customer service and efficiency from assigned management personnel. The incumbent will provide guidance, delegate authority, and hold managers and union labor accountable for department and terminal goals.

Essential Duties
  • Manage the overall equipment assets including maintaining inventories at assigned locations and constantly evaluating assignment and effective utilization of equipment.
  • Leads and provides direction for General Managers assigned to a department or account ensuring that productivity, safety, and efficiency standards are met.
  • Develops and maintains positive customer and port relations by understanding customer needs, terms, and conditions of contracts, developing plans to meet those needs, and ensuring that General Managers are holding union mechanics accountable for high customer service principals.
  • Assists in the development of and ensures General Managers operate within approved fiscal budget limits.
  • Evaluates and develops by coaching and providing feedback, General Managers who manage the level of performance and productivity necessary to achieve current and future objectives.
  • Owns safety performance for the M&R department, enforcing accident prevention programs, safety procedures (LOTO, fall protection, crane-specific protocols), and workers' compensation programs across all assigned locations.
  • Leads or oversees incident investigations, ensuring root cause analysis is completed and corrective actions are tracked to closure; conducts regular safety audits and job site inspections.
  • Ensures that all management staff works effectively as a team with each other and with other departments.
  • Ensures effective and regular communication and high employee morale.
  • Communicates areas of accountability and performance expectations to Management staff assigned, acknowledging, and addressing both high and poor performance as needed.
  • Ensures management team communicates terminal expectations to union team regularly and develops plans to meet customer needs.
  • Supports VP with goals and objectives development and achievement providing regular updates.
  • Work with Operational Excellence and Engineering Teams to address production improvements on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for the implementation of new processes and procedures and/or technologies into the workplace, including the administration of all supporting operational or procedural modifications in accordance with such.
  • Maintains positive relations with union workforce and officials through formal and informal meetings, regular policy communication with staff, and maintaining a thorough knowledge of contracts and company policy.
  • Ensures that all company policies, procedures, and controls are understood and followed and that reports are completed accurately, submitted on time to appropriate staff, customers, and other designated personnel.
  • Ensures safe, efficient, and productive planning and execution of operating plans. Regularly audits success and failures related to such plans and establishes corrective actions accordingly.
  • Works closely with the Terminal Security Management to ensure that regulations are followed, and Terminal is secure and safe at all times.
  • Works with HR and LR in obtaining consultation and/or direction with employment law, company policies and procedures and consistent application.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

BS/BA degree in Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, Engineering, or equivalent experience working in management in addition to below.

5 years managing union labor with extensive knowledge of related union contracts and employment and labor laws.

Thorough knowledge of terminal operations practices and principles.

Must have extensive working knowledge of terminal operating systems, equipment, and workflow.

Must have basic accounting, statistics, problem solving, goal setting and business applications understanding.

Thorough knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.

Knowledge of general engineering principles covering mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering.

Physical Working Conditions

The ability to stand for extended periods of time.

The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.

The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.

The ability to drive 35%

The ability to lift 30 pounds, to include frequent movement of damaged cargo container materials.

The ability to use a computer/keyboard.
