Job summary

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated seeks a Director-level scientific and technical leader to drive the agentic AI co-scientist initiative across the organization. You will align cross-functional teams, define strategy and delivery plans for co-scientist capabilities, and evaluate both internal development and external tools.

The role is Boston-based, hybrid with 3 days onsite weekly. You will shape the scientific validation, governance, and deployment of AI capabilities that augment hypothesis

Qualifications

• Deep understanding of drug discovery and scientific workflows.
• Expert in modern AI, including LLMs, agentic systems, and retrieval.
• Ability to define rigorous evaluations and success measures for AI-enabled tools.
• Strong collaboration with platform/infra teams for scalable compute and data governance.
• Experience influencing senior stakeholders and leading cross-functional initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional teams to define priorities and a roadmap for co-scientist capabilities.
• Drive development of scientific systems, data integration, and agentic roles and orchestration patterns.
• Lead evaluation of internal and external AI capabilities, establishing benchmarks and governance.
• Establish rigorous validation standards for correctness, novelty, reliability, and provenance.
• Drive deployment across scientific domains and translate workflows into AI opportunities.
• Represent the effort with executives, communicating strategy, progress, and resource needs.
• Shape agentic AI workflows and operating models for planning, traceability, and reproducibility.
• Influence infrastructure strategy to support trusted data access and scalable compute.
• Ensure adoption through milestone-based execution and stakeholder alignment.
• Drive innovation by tracking emergent technologies in agentic AI.
