Job summary

Confidential Biotech Company in the San Francisco area seeks a Director of Accounting to oversee clinical and operational accounting in a high-visibility role. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Public/private mix, CPA certification
• 6+ years of relevant finance and accounting experience, including previous experience within a public biotech or life sciences company
• Experience managing complex clinical trial accruals within the life sciences industry
• Demonstrated ability in leading an accounting function, including recruitment, development and retention of top industry talent
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams
• Proficiency with financial systems and software, including NetSuite
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities

Responsibilities

• Lead and participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
• Own the clinical trial expense accrual process and partner with Clinical Operations.
• Manage operational accounting activities including 1099/1042 reporting and sales tax compliance.
• Ensure compliance with US GAAP, SOX, internal controls, and policies.
• Partner with technical accounting teams and support audits.
• Drive process improvements and automation leveraging NetSuite, Excel, and AI tools.
• Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
• Serve as a hands-on leader balancing day-to-day work with strategic oversight.

• Own the clinical trial expense accrual process and partner with Clinical Operations to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of study costs.
• Manage operational accounting activities, including 1099/1042 reporting and sales and use tax compliance.
• Ensure compliance with US GAAP, SOX requirements, internal controls, and corporate accounting policies.
• Partner with technical accounting teams and support audit and compliance initiatives.
• Drive process improvements and automation initiatives, leveraging technology, NetSuite, Excel, and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and accuracy.
• Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff within a collaborative, high-performing environment.
• Serve as a hands-on accounting leader who is comfortable executing day-to-day accounting responsibilities while providing strategic oversight.
