Job description

Title: Assistant Controller (Director of Accounting)

Reports to: Corporate Controller

This Is Not a Typical Assistant Controller Role

  • Most Assistant Controller opportunities look the same on paper. Long hours. Pressure-driven culture. A revolving door of talent. A manager you rarely see.

--This is not that--

  • This is a seat inside one of the most respected privately held organizations in Broward County, where the accounting team has an average tenure that would make most CFOs jealous. People do not leave here. When you find out why, you will understand.
Why This Opportunity Is Different
  • There are Assistant Controller roles, and then there are career-defining roles. This is the latter.
  • The company has built something rare: a workplace where technical challenge and personal sustainability actually coexist. You will do genuinely complex, sophisticated accounting work across multiple business lines. The scope is real. The exposure is substantial.
  • ***But you will not be grinding at midnight.*** You will not be sacrificing your personal life to prove your worth. The culture here is built on trust, competence, and mutual respect, not performative overwork.
  • Leadership is accessible. Your contributions are visible. And the people who sit beside you have chosen to stay, year after year, because the environment earns that loyalty.

If you are a sharp CPA coming out of public accounting and you are ready to step into an industry-side role where your technical foundation is truly valued, this is worth your time.

The Company
  • This is a large, privately held company headquartered in the heart of Broward County. The organization spans multiple verticals, giving the accounting function a breadth that is genuinely uncommon at companies of this size.
  • Private ownership means you operate without the noise of quarterly earnings cycles or Wall Street pressure. There is no Private Equity involved either.
The Role

The Assistant Controller reports directly to the Controller and serves as a key technical leader within the accounting function. You will own the integrity of the general ledger across multiple business divisions, lead month-end and year-end close, and serve as a primary point of contact for the annual audit.

This is not a maintenance role. You will be expected to identify inefficiencies, improve processes, and elevate the analytical quality of what the team produces. You will also mentor and develop junior associates, which means your influence extends well beyond your own output.

The Controller and CFO know who you are. Your work will be seen, and your voice will carry weight.

What You Will Own
  • Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes across multiple divisions.
  • Prepare and review financial statements including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and variance analysis against budget and prior year
  • Oversee general ledger accuracy and consistency, ensuring all activity aligns with GAAP and internal control standards
  • Manage audit preparation and serve as a primary liaison with external auditors throughout the annual audit cycle (Over a decade of clean audits with NO material weakness)
  • Identify opportunities to streamline reporting, improve procedures, and enhance the efficiency of the accounting function
  • Develop, document, and implement accounting policies and internal controls
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to less experienced members of the accounting team
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with legal, finance, and operational departments on special projects and company initiatives
The Profile That Succeeds Here
  • The candidates who thrive in this role come directly out of public accounting. That background builds exactly the kind of technical rigor, audit experience, and GAAP fluency that this role demands. If you spent your early career in a public accounting firm building your foundation, this is the opportunity where that foundation pays off.
***Non‑Negotiable Requirements***
  • Active CPA license (required, no exceptions)
  • 7 to 13 years of accounting experience, with the majority spent in public accounting
  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • Advanced Excel proficiency

At this time, the client is exclusively considering candidates who match this background. Please do not apply if you do not hold an active CPA license.

Compensation and Quality of Life

This role is highly competitive in the South Florida market. Total compensation reflects the seniority and technical expectation of the position, and the company's commitment to retaining exceptional people long term.

Beyond compensation, what makes this role compelling is the actual quality of the work experience: predictably hours, genuine flexibility, a supportive leadership team…

If you are a CPA with a strong public accounting foundation..
