Job description

The Director of Accounting is a key accounting leader responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the accounting team, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger functions. This role directly supervises and develops AR, AP, and GL staff while also maintaining individual contributor responsibilities for revenue accounting, sales commissions, and interest expense. This person will play a key role in our annual financial audit and work with other departments to ensure cross-functional alignment. Additional functions include preparing financial reports and analysis and liaising with the Finance team on budgeting and forecasting activities. The person will report to and assist the Controller in all aspects related to accounting at the organization. This candidate should be comfortable partnering with cross-functional teams to drive improvement across the organization and be comfortable reporting for a wide array of local and foreign entities.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise, develop, and coach staff accountants across the AR, AP, and GL functions; set performance expectations and support ongoing professional development.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of the accounting functions, including revenue operations, billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and the general ledger.
• Ensure compliance with ASC 606 software licensing and SaaS arrangements and ASC 350-40 accounting for software and cloud computing arrangement costs.
• Review customer contracts and sales orders for accurate revenue treatment.
• Prepare monthly entries and reconciliations for deferred revenue, unbilled revenue, and revenue-related accruals.
• Calculate, record, and reconcile interest expense accruals and loan-related journal entries, ensuring accuracy of principal balances, interest calculations, and proper month-end reporting.
• Administer sales commission plans, including plan setup, Salesforce data review, monthly payout calculations, and resolving sales team inquiries.
• Key lead & contact for external audit.
• Document processes and accounting memos.
• Lead the preparation, completeness, and accuracy of all aspects of the monthly financial close processes in partnership with others on the team, monitoring close progression and ensuring that tasks & reconciliation are completed in an efficient and sustainable way and in accordance with GAAP.
• Assist the Controller with purchase accounting for acquisitions and other GAAP compliance related projects.
• Establish a business relationship with internal and external stakeholders.
• Participate in corporate initiatives to improve processes.
• Other duties as assigned.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; MAcc and/or CPA a plus.
• Demonstrated experience applying ASC 606 to SaaS or software licensing arrangements, including review of customer contracts, deferred revenue accounting, and revenue-related reconciliations.
• Proven track record of managing and developing a team, with experience setting expectations, coaching performance, and building scalable close processes.
• Seven (7) or more years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a SaaS or software company.
• ERP experience required.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
