Job description

Overview

Reports to Sr. Vice President, Patient Care Services/CNO. Responsible for identifying, implementing, monitoring andevaluating nursing standards of practice and operational quality improvement activities; including all HumanResource and Educational activities. Responsible for special projects in the Critical Care area.


Responsibilities

  • Participates with the Sr. Vice President for Patient Care Services and other members of the nursing staff inestablishing philosophy and goals of the Nursing Department.
  • Monitors planning of staffing to ensure safe patient care.
  • Ensures that all areas have appropriate staffing plans, and recruitment, hiring & retention practices toretain qualified staff for positions. Monitors staffing effectiveness regularly.
  • Provides direct supervision of Assistant Directors of Nursing, Nurse Managers and Administrative NursingCoordinators.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of legal, regulatory and union requirements . In addition provide clinicalleadership to adhere to enforcement of state nursing practices.
  • Provides effective, timely response and communication with superiors, peers, staff, otherdepartments/disciplines, and Medical staff. Meets regularly with Chairperson of Service for joint planning.
  • Plans data-driven Performance Improvement activities which fit into the organization-wide plan and makesquantifiable improvements in the services provided.
  • Participates with Sr. Vice President for Patient Care Services in establishing standards/guidelines/policieswhich ensure efficient, safe and effective patient care.
  • Participates with Sr. Vice President for Patient Care Services in planning the portion of nursingDepartment’s budget, table of organization for the division and control of the divisional budget.
  • Provides opportunities for professional growth and development of staff based on clinical and professionalstandards of clinical care and of professional practice.
  • Monitors the counseling and discipline of nursing personnel.
  • Provides consultation in the area of clinical expertise.
  • Represents the division of ambulatory nursing on selected committees through participation orrepresentation Provides administrative coverage for the Nursing Department as necessary.
  • Participates in the system of continuing education to increase administrative and clinical knowledge andskills.
  • Innovative and implements best practices in care.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Sr. Vice President for Patient Care Services.
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Provides clear communication to staff regarding the hospital and department’s mission, vision and goals.
  • Conducts regular departmental meetings and addresses the items.
  • Role models and fosters effective professional relationships with other departments and members of the health care team.
  • Plans data-driven Performance Improvement activities which fit into the organization-wide plan and makes quantifiable improvements in the services provided.
  • Develops effective working relationships with ancillary and support services that result in improved patient care and/or departmental functioning.
  • Establishes and monitors customer service improvement goals, which focus on priority aspects of patient satisfaction.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of accredited Nursing School BSN, required.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field is required. Exceptional experience in lieu of education will be considered. Exceptional experience is outlined below in the experience section.
  • Doctorate preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum ten (10) years of nursing experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Critical thinking, math, and computer skills (Excel & Word).
  • Effective application of TQM teams, quality measures, clinical guidelines and process management initiatives.
  • Monitors and facilitates the meeting of requirements of NYSDOH, JCAHO and other regulators.
  • Capable in producing trend and evaluation data and documentation.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement philosophy models, processes and tools and their use in health care integrated settings.
  • Maintains currency with state of the art and regulatory trends.
  • Knowledge of methods for CQI, and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Works effectively in integrated structure by establishing effective working relationships with all departments and levels of staff.
  • Works as a team player.
  • Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills.
  • Experience and demonstrated competency in applicable clinical specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional growth and development.
  • Demonstrates competence in leadership and administrative skills.
    Decision making and problem solving. Essential Sensory Requirements:
  • Able to see, hear, read and write English.

Licences, Certifications:

  • Licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse in New York State required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) required
  • Certification in Area of Specialty is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically demanding, high-stress environmentrequiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
  • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
  • Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range.
  • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer.
  • Ability to flex working hours.
  • On call
