Job description

Ghost is a data-driven distribution platform for the best brands in the world. We partner with leading streetwear, apparel, footwear, beauty, and home goods brands to unlock new revenue for all types of inventory. Through transparency, data insights, and a network of vetted buyers, Ghost empowers sellers to diversify and optimize their inventory management. Backed by top VC firms (L Catterton, Cathay, USV, Equal, Eniac), Ghost is one of LA’s fastest-growing startups.

About the Role

We’re looking for a business-minded and strategic Director, Legal & Business Affairs to join our team. As our first in-house legal hire, you will take full ownership of the legal function, with a strong focus on leading and scaling our customer contracting process. You’ll be a trusted advisor to the executive team and a critical partner to Sales, Finance, Product, and Operations.

Key Responsibilities
Customer & Commercial Agreements
  • Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of all customer contracts, including MSAs, subscription agreements, SLAs, and DPAs.
  • Serve as a strategic legal partner to Revenue and Customer Success to help close deals efficiently while managing legal and business risk.
  • Build and maintain contract templates, negotiation playbooks, and scalable processes to support high-volume growth.
  • Partner with Product teams to navigate security questionnaires, privacy terms, and compliance issues during customer negotiations.
  • Provide legal advice across a range of topics including product compliance, data privacy, marketing, and employment.
  • Develop internal policies and processes to ensure compliance with applicable laws and industry standards (GDPR, CCPA, etc.).
  • Own and manage the company’s insurance program, including procurement, renewals, policy compliance, and ensuring coverage accuracy and cost-efficiency across all business lines.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks proactively across departments.
  • Educate internal teams on legal and regulatory topics as needed.
Outside Counsel Management
  • Coordinate and manage outside counsel for specialized matters (IP, international expansion, litigation, employment).
  • Serve as the point of contact between the company and all external legal resources, managing quality and cost.
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school; licensed and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 5+ years of legal experience, including a mix of law firm and in-house (preferably at a high-growth tech company).
  • Proven experience negotiating and owning customer contracts, ideally in Wholesale Distribution, Inventory Liquidation, B2B Commerce and Retail.
  • Experience managing customer disputes, including serving as the legal point of contact for resolution and coordinating potential litigation when necessary.
  • Ability to support and advise on collections strategy, including drafting demand letters and enforcing contractual remedies to recover outstanding balances.
  • Experience with global contracting and compliance, a plus
  • Comfortable working independently, owning legal operations end-to-end, and building systems from scratch.
  • Strong business judgment and excellent communication skills—able to balance risk with practical business needs.
  • Familiarity with equity, executive compensation, and startup financing, a plus
  • Proficiency with tools like Salesforce, Ironclad, DocuSign, or similar CLM systems, a plus

Our total compensation for this position can range from $185,000 - $225,000 . The actual amounts may vary based on factors such as experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Benefits we offer:

  • Medical, Vision, and Dental with some plans covered at 100%
  • Competitive compensation and equity structure
  • 401K
  • Unlimited PTO

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp .
