Job description

This is a full-time role for an experienced US-licensed attorney.

It is not an in-house counsel position and does not require previous experience working in AI.

About Us
  • At Aligned, we've built an expert-powered data and evaluation platform to support research at leading AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta.
  • We have grown a community of tens of thousands of carefully vetted experts with advanced degrees and senior-level experience across industry, government, and academia.
  • Our experts support major AI initiatives by providing subject-matter expertise, evaluating the performance of unreleased models, and designing complex real-world problems that push the limits of current AI systems.

We are a remote-first company, led by a Google Gemini veteran CEO and seasoned founders.

Unlike most early stage companies, we are not VC funded and are committed to maintaining a small, high-impact team of exceptional people and focusing on sustainable, profitable growth.

The Role
  • You’ll report directly to our COO and personally own our largest legal projects with our most important AI clients.
  • You’ll define project goals, oversee hundreds of senior attorneys and legal experts, ensure deliverables exceed client expectations, and keep our clients informed at every step.

This is an operating role, not a practicing role.

You’ll be applying your legal training to direct expert work at scale rather than representing clients yourself.

It is also a strategic role.

You’ll work directly with our clients to understand what they need their models to learn about legal reasoning, and you’ll shape how our legal projects are structured to get them there.

What You’ll Do
Project Strategy
  • Partner closely with our CEO and COO to continuously improve the strategy for our AI client relationships, client projects, and expert operations
  • Work with teams at leading AI companies to understand their goals for legal capabilities, and translate those goals into well-structured projects
  • Determine the task types and review process each project needs to succeed
Project Ownership
  • Own large-scale client engagements from kickoff through final delivery, defining scope, timelines, and success metrics
  • Serve as the primary client contact for regular updates, strategic reviews, and issue resolution
Expert Operations
  • Define expert profiles and sourcing requirements for each project
  • Design onboarding processes and ongoing training to ensure consistent quality
  • Confidently evaluate credentials and provide feedback to leading attorneys across private practice, government, and academia
  • Identify which experts are strong enough to review the work of their peers, and promote them to reviewers
  • Calibrate reviewers so standards hold consistently across the project
Quality Control
  • Audit expert and reviewer deliverables and implement improvements to drive better outcomes
  • Accurately track and report on key performance metrics
Why This Role Is Exciting
  • You’ll lead large teams of talented litigators, appellate lawyers, law professors, and senior practitioners working on frontier AI projects at some of the world's leading AI companies.
  • Through these projects, you’ll gain a firsthand view into how leading AI systems are being evaluated and improved, and direct influence over how these systems learn to reason about the law.

As an early hire, you’ll have significant influence on how we build and scale our operations, with the opportunity to eventually lead parts of the business.

You’ll have a high degree of autonomy, supported by experienced founders.

And the systems and processes you build will create opportunities for thousands of talented lawyers while helping improve AI systems across some of the world's most important fields.

What We’re Looking For
  • The ideal candidate is an experienced litigator or appellate lawyer.
  • Exceptional attorneys from other practice areas should also apply.

More concretely:

  • Legal Depth.

You have a JD, are admitted to practice in at least one U.S.

jurisdiction, and have 5+ years of serious practice experience.

Your experience is current, not something you did long ago.

  • Throughput.

You handle high volume without letting quality slip or things sit.

You're comfortable moving fast across a lot of moving parts.

  • Relevant Experience.

You have supervised other attorneys, led case teams, or run your own practice, with direct ownership of client or senior-stakeholder relationships.

  • World-Class Client Service.

You become the preferred partner for every client you work with.

You have high integrity, go above and beyond, communicate exceptionally, and make every client's job easier than before they met you.

  • Technical Fluency.

You already use AI tools in your own work, and you're comfortable working in Excel or Google Sheets.

  • Data Driven.

You're comfortable tracking performance metrics, identifying trends, and using data-driven insights to make decisions.

  • Remote Operator.

You have excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience working with a high degree of autonomy.

Compensation & Benefits
  • $175k per year base salary
  • Employee profit sharing.

We're cash-flow positive with strong revenue, so this is a real economic stake.

  • Healthcare benefits
  • Fully remote work with flexible hours
  • Significant growth opportunity and influence as an early team member
  • Mentorship from experienced founders
  • Direct exposure to cutting-edge AI companies and research
