Position Summary

We seek an experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney reporting to the Vice President of IP. The role involves supporting our IP functions to protect small molecule product candidates. The candidate should enjoy working collaboratively with inventors, scientific leaders, and legal teams. This position is based in South San Francisco and requires onsite presence four days a week.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Manage global IP portfolio, including patent application preparation and prosecution, focusing on small molecules and IP strategy development.
  2. Collaborate with cross-department teams to identify patentable inventions and develop IP protection strategies.
  3. Assess complex risks such as patentability, infringement, and validity; craft mitigation strategies.
  4. Conduct freedom to operate reviews, analyze third-party patent positions, and guide IP strategy.
  5. Support IP diligence and business development activities.
  6. Manage external legal counsel and ensure compliance with global IP laws.
  7. Coordinate patent filings with collaborators and licensors.
  8. Contribute to developing IP policies and provide company-wide IP training.
  9. Monitor and analyze the IP landscape for risks and opportunities.
Minimum Requirements
  1. Ph.D. in Chemistry (preferably Organic) or Master’s in Organic Chemistry.
  2. Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school, member of the California Bar, or qualified as California Registered In-House Counsel.
  3. Registered before the USPTO.
  4. At least 7 years of IP counsel/support experience in pharmaceutical small molecules, including 2-3 years in-house.
  5. Proven success in developing patent strategies and securing patents.
  6. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  7. Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret scientific and legal info.
  8. Proficiency with scientific and IP databases.
  9. Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

The salary range is $237,879 - $293,851 annually, with a comprehensive benefits package. Final salary depends on experience, education, and other factors.
