Job summary

Bowie State University is seeking a Director of Information Security to lead a university-wide program, reporting to the CIO. The role supervises the ISO and Information Assurance Specialists and drives risk reduction across academic, research and admin functions.

Candidates should have a CISSP and 10+ years of leadership in cybersecurity, with experience in cloud security, audits, and regulatory compliance within large organizations, preferably higher education.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
• 10+ years of progressive leadership in cybersecurity, preferably in higher education or large organizations.
• Proven success building cybersecurity programs in complex environments.
• CISSP certification required.
• Experience with FERPA, HIPAA, NIST, ISO 27001 and privacy laws.

Responsibilities

• Advise, develop and maintain university-wide information security program aligned with regulatory standards.
• Oversee the ISO and Information Assurance Specialists.
• Advise on secure cloud infrastructure and zero-trust architecture.
• Manage incident response planning and reporting.
• Coordinate audits with state agencies, OLA and external partners.
• Develop and promote cybersecurity awareness across the university.
• Collaborate with academic, research and administrative units on secure use of technology and data.
• Manage cybersecurity vendor relationships and investments.
• Support CIO with grants, research partnerships and accreditation efforts.
